Job summary

Wildwood Clinic in Madison, WI is seeking a full-time Medical Assistant to support providers and manage patient care across all ages. You will perform clinical and clerical duties, coordinate tests and results, and assist with lab work under supervision.

Purpose of the Position: The Medical Assistant works under the supervision of the clinic provider and the MA Manager. This position requires an ability to perform a wide variety of patient care activities, including but not limited to: certain clerical duties, limited lab duties and assisting the clinic provider with any necessary procedures on patients including infants, children, adolescents and adults (including geriatrics). Cross training is required, as staffing dictates. This position is involved in the coordination of patient care activities with outside providers and serves as a liaison between patients and clinic providers.

Essential Functions
  1. Rooms patients and prepares charts by identifying the chief complaint, obtaining, and documenting vital signs and collecting accurate and complete data as appropriate to patient contact.
  2. Assists in scheduling and maintenance of appointments, utilizing computerized scheduling.
  3. Prepares and distributes patient test results to the clinic provider; informs patients of test results and follow-up activities according to clinic protocol.
  4. Calls and faxes prescription refills to pharmacy.
  5. Works with the clinic provider to coordinate preoperative/postoperative care.
  6. Assists the clinic provider with medical procedures and exams.
  7. Administers immunizations/injections as ordered by the clinic provider.
  8. Assists in the maintenance of medical records according to clinic protocol.
  9. Assists in the orderly and efficient flow of patients.
  10. Provides guidance and mentoring to Medical Assistant and LPN students.
  11. Performs laboratory testing covered by CLIA, performs venipuncture, prepares specimens for transport, and complies with quality control measures.
  12. Assists the clinic provider in completion of various medical forms, (i.e., RTW, school forms, DOT, worker’s compensation, etc.).
  13. Assists the clinic provider with patient/family education and teaching.
  14. Keeps an inventory of stock medication/drug samples and medical supplies according to WFC protocol.
  15. Prepares, stocks, and cleans patient care areas to enhance patient care and efficiency.
  16. Operates special equipment and performs medical procedures as directed by the clinic provider.
  17. Follows infection control protocols regarding patient examinations and room maintenance.
  18. Conducts proper biohazard waste disposal and follows WFC Blood borne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan.
  19. Operates the sterilizer; sterilizes and wraps instruments and completes logbook according to WFC protocol.
  20. Executes scheduled cleaning maintenance of diagnostic equipment and initiates requests for repairs (or replacements) of medical equipment through appropriate departments as necessary.
  21. Works collaboratively with insurance companies to initiate referrals, and or obtain approvals, prior authorizations, for medical care and treatment.
  22. Coordinates patient care activities and documentation with outside providers (i.e., lab, radiology, PT/OT, consultants, and home health care, etc.).

Qualifications
  1. Certificate/Degree/License Requirements: Certification or Registry through AAMA or other CAAHEP OR ABHES accredited program.
  2. Experience Requirements: Six months experience in a medical practice environment preferred.
  3. Skills Requirements: See Physical and Cognitive Requirements, above; ability to operate computer, printer, telephone, fax, and copier.
  4. Education Requirements: High school graduate or equivalent.
  5. Communicative Skills: Ability to effectively communicate, verbally and in writing, in person and over the telephone, with co-workers, clinic providers, patients, and patients' families.
