I. Job Summary:

Supervise and manage the school library/media center and curriculum lab. Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems. Serve as teacher, materials expert, and curriculum advisor to ensure involvement in instructional programs of the school.

II. Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Possess a State of Minnesota Library and Media Specialist license.
  • Be in compliance with Minnesota state license requirements and code of ethics/conduct.
  • Provide group instruction and individual guidance to students to help them locate resources and use research techniques according to their Individual Education Plan.
  • Consult with teachers on appropriate use of materials.
  • Serve as information resources for users of library/media center materials and provide staff development opportunities for teachers on the availability of learning resources.
  • Compile, maintain and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents.
  • Comply with federal and state laws, Minnesota Board of Education rule, and board policy in the library/media services area.
  • Provide consultation to teachers and other staff involved in the education of the student by providing guidance and ensuring that the program objectives are achieved.
  • Maintain records and case files (progress reports, IEP plans) for students serve according to Minnesota statute/guidelines and maintain confidentiality.
  • Effectively participate in communication and collaborative efforts with the school and parents/families to support the success of the child.
  • Participate in team meetings, school wide team meetings and staff development.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, Professional Learning Community (PLC) and team meetings for staff development, committees and curriculum projects.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with school staff.
  • Process and maintain materials for two libraries: general library and Curriculum Lab library.
  • Attends and participates in regularly scheduled activities outside of school hours as directed by school administration.
  • Supervises students during the school day according to established building supervision schedule as well as indirect supervision at all times during school activities.
  • Pursues professional development activities to broaden and deepen knowledge of content and skills and continually identifies professional needs and develops strategies to meet these needs.
  • Participates in parent/teacher conferences.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal and Executive Director.
III. Competencies/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge - library science.
  • Communication - demonstrates fluency in ASL and written English, with an understanding of Deaf culture and bilingualism.
  • Recordkeeping – maintain accurate student records and store them in a confidential manners.
  • Clientele – the individual shows the knowledge and abilities to provide instruction and manage student behavior.
  • Collaboration – the individual will provide collaborative services with teachers and other essential staff.
  • Services provided – the individual will communicate with students to determine the services necessary.
IV. Job Outcome:
  • Maintains a positive attitude and style in dealing with others in a manner that contributes to the overall public relations of Metro Deaf School.
