I. Job Summary: The School Nurse will be responsible for providing health care to students at Metro Deaf School, as well as treatment to students with health needs. The School Nurse will maintain records and documentation and create reports according to regulations. The School Nurse will have the ability to take initiative, work and communicate with students, parents, and staff to maintain the health and well-being of all.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Reports to the Executive Director.
• Possess and maintain current Minnesota LPN or RN licensure and a current CPR/First Aid certification.
• Knowledge of and expertise in federal and state laws in student health services. Ability to follow laws and district policies.
• Provide daily nursing services, including assessment and treatment of minor illnesses and injuries, first aid, health monitoring, and assistance with student toileting and personal care as needed.
• Demonstrate knowledge and competency in administering medications and providing health-related procedures, including but not limited to epinephrine auto-injectors (EpiPens), insulin administration, nebulizer treatments, tracheostomy care, and other medically necessary interventions at the school level.
• Manage OTC and prescribed medication - dispensing, tracking, permission forms, communicating with parents/guardians.
• Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns, illness or injury incidents, medication administration, and recommendations for follow-up care or school exclusion when appropriate.
• Attend IEPs and meetings for medically complex students as needed.
• Develop and provide training for staff regarding students with unique medical needs.
• Develop and maintain Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Care Plans (ECPs), and other student-specific medical plans as needed.
• Collaborate with families, healthcare providers, and school staff regarding student health needs and accommodations.
• Knowledge of immunization schedules and laws, and maintain immunization data, recording, and state reporting.
• Serve as Cardiac Emergency Response Plan (CERP) Coordinator and participate in school safety planning and emergency preparedness activities.
• Monitor, track, and provide guidance regarding communicable diseases and outbreaks in accordance with state and local public health recommendations.
• Communicate health alerts and prevention strategies to students, families, and staff as appropriate.
• Create and develop protocols for the health office.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student information
• Provide services in a nurturing, child friendly environment.
• Maintain a sanitary nursing space/office.
• Work collaboratively with the office team as needed.
• Maintains nursing and technology equipment inventory.
• Maintain professional growth and obtain ongoing training.

III. Competencies/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position.

• Skills and abilities in scheduling, organization, time management, flexibility and recordkeeping as well as ability to work independently.
• Communication - demonstrates fluency in ASL and written English, with an understanding of Deaf culture and bilingualism.
• Recordkeeping – Familiarity with database programs for entering health records
• Clientele – Knowledge of/experience working with persons who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Deaf/Blind and other disabilities.
• Knowledge - assess illnesses and injuries, and health issues such as immunizations, diabetes, blood borne pathogens, asthma, seizures, allergies, concussions, etc.
• Collaboration – the individual will provide collaborative health services to students and communicate with staff and parents/guardians as needed/required.
• Services provided – the individual will communicate with the Executive Director and Administrative Team to determine the nursing needs and services for the school.

IV. Physical Demands and Work Environment:

• Ability to lift and assist students as needed.
• Ability to respond quickly to medical emergencies throughout the school environment.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform nursing procedures.
• Ability to safely transport nursing supplies and equipment.

Qualifications

• Minnesota Nursing License required
• LPN or RN required in accordance with Minnesota Board of Nursing
• School nurse or public nurse experience preferred with deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing students
• Demonstrate nursing aptitude required to perform the position as expected
• Clean driving record with valid MN driver’s license
• Reliable and flexible
• Good communication skills in written English enough to understand written policies, procedures and to complete documentation and maintain records.
• Fluency in American Sign Language preferred in order to communicate effectively with staff and students
• Must be able to work with staff and students of diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds
• Ability to work collaboratively
