Job summary

The National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh seeks a versatile Mechatronics Engineer focused on mechanical design, rapid prototyping, and hands‑on system integration. You will own the lifecycle of your designs from brainstorming and modeling to physical assembly, wiring, and hardware‑in‑the‑loop testing.

Lead bespoke mechanical architecture for robotic systems, fabricate parts via 3D printing and CNC, and ensure robust electrical harnessing.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related field) or equivalent experience.
  • 1–3 years of engineering experience.
  • Open to a range of experience levels; focus on problem solving and hands‑on work.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling with a portfolio of physical builds.
  • Deep understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and designing for custom fabrication over off‑the‑shelf components.
  • Experience with mechanical assembly, hand tools, and wiring harnesses; basic electronics debugging.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical architecture and detailed design of custom robotic systems and enclosures.
  • Rapid prototyping and fabrication using 3D printing, CNC machining, laser cutting, and traditional methods.
  • Full build ownership including assembly and wiring of hardware.
  • Testing and electronics debugging with basic tools (multimeters, oscilloscopes).
  • Scope ambiguous requests, analyze constraints, and communicate technical trade‑offs before execution.
