Job summary

Auburn University Facilities Management is seeking a Mechanical Technical Advisor to serve as the University's premier technical resource for HVAC systems, building controls, and facility operations across a growing campus. You will report to the Maintenance Engineer and act as the lead authority for HVAC, steam, and controls supporting more than 250 facilities and over 7 million square feet of space.

Qualifications

  • 7 years of experience in mechanical maintenance, including HVAC, with best practices for preventative maintenance of building systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers and employees.
  • At least one year of experience mentoring others and leading projects.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as SME on mechanical and elevator systems for the Maintenance Department, diagnosing problems and prescribing repair methods when needed.
  • Coordinates and oversees a mechanical quality control program for maintenance tasks and installations.
  • Reviews mechanical design documents to ensure compliance with University standards and improves future maintainability.
  • Provides on-site inspections for mechanical construction and renovation projects to ensure compliance with standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Plans outages for operational effectiveness and communicates with stakeholders to maximize efficiency and resolve issues.
  • Evaluates proposed mechanical jobs to estimate costs and prepares written and oral quotes; plans renovations and project requirements.
  • Develops, updates, and trains staff on procedures for safe, accurate, and high-quality mechanical work.

Overview

Are you an HVAC expert who enjoys solving complex challenges and making a lasting impact? Auburn University Facilities Management is seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Technical Advisor to serve as the University's premier technical resource for HVAC systems, building controls, and facility operations across a vibrant and growing campus. Reporting to the Maintenance Engineer, this position serves as the lead technical authority for heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and control systems that support more than 250 campus facilities and over 7 million square feet of building space. As the University's subject matter expert, you will provide advanced technical guidance and troubleshooting for the Facilities Maintenance Zones and Shops, helping resolve complex, non-routine HVAC and controls issues that keep campus operations running smoothly.

In this critical role, you will play a key part in the successful execution of more than 6,500 HVAC-related maintenance work orders annually, ensuring Auburn's classrooms, laboratories, research facilities, and administrative buildings remain safe, comfortable, and operational. Your expertise will directly support the University's teaching, research, and outreach mission while helping maintain one of the nation's most beautiful campuses. Responsibilities
  • Serves as the subject matter expert on all mechanical (includes, but is not limited to: HVAC, boilers, steam, motors, drives, pumps, and controls) and elevator systems for the Maintenance Department. When mechanical work requirements are too complex for technical personnel, this position will diagnose problems and prescribe repair methods.
  • Coordinates and oversees a mechanical quality control program where mechanical maintenance tasks and new installations are reviewed for compliance to applicable standards.
  • Reviews mechanical design documents to ensure compliance to University standards and provides input to design team that enhances the ability for AU Maintenance staff to care for the systems in the future.
  • Provides periodic on-site inspections for mechanical construction and renovation projects to ensure work performed by University tradesmen and contractors meet University mechanical standards and contract requirements and in a manner that complies with the appropriate regulatory agencies.
  • Plans for and ensures necessary outages are reviewed for operational effectiveness. Communicates with stakeholders to keep them aware of activities, maximize effeciencies, answer questions, and resolve issues.
  • Evaluates proposed mechancial jobs in order to estimate and provide written and oral quotes. Meets with clients to gather information in development of estimates. Plans and organizes mechanical renovations and construction project requirements for facilities and infrastructure on University property.
  • Develops, and keeps current, procedures and operating instructions for safe, accurate and quality mechanical work performance. Provides training on a regular basis with small group classes or independently to increase mechanical skill and knowledge of all technical personnel across the Maintenance Department, but especially those in the mechanical job family.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED (Vocational/technical diploma preferred) and 7 years of experience in mechanical maintenance (including HVAC) and establishing best practices for preventative maintenance of building systems. Ability to effectively communicate with customers and employees. At least one year experience mentoring others and leading projects.

Or

  • Some college; vocational or Associate's Degree - additional education (Community/Technical/Vocational College and/or 4-year college degree) in a technical field can substitute for experience.
Licenses/Certifications:
  • Universal Refrigerant Certification - Upon Hire.
  • Valid Driver's License - Upon Hire.

SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED FOR EXPERIENCE: Yes, When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
