Job summary

IPG in Schaumburg, IL is seeking a Mechanical Systems Engineer to drive retrofit, modernization, and automation improvements across customer equipment and internal manufacturing systems.

You will assess existing machines, design modifications, create engineering documentation, and support from concept through commissioning, collaborating with field service, operations, and engineering teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering required or related discipline.
• 5+ years designing, supporting, modifying, or upgrading industrial machinery and automated equipment.
• Strong mechanical engineering and machine design experience.
• Experience with retrofits, rebuilds, modernization projects, or custom modifications.
• Working knowledge of PLC-based automation, HMIs, robotics, and networks.
• Experience reading mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.
• Experience creating engineering documentation and BOMs.
• Willingness to travel 50–70%.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate equipment and develop retrofit, upgrade, or modernization solutions.
• Design mechanical modifications for packaging machinery and automation systems.
• Create layouts, drawings, BOMs, and change documentation.
• Perform field assessments and define project scope and requirements.
• Support installation, startup, commissioning, and validation.
• Provide technical support to field service and customers.
• Collaborate with operations and engineering teams.
