Job summary

Field AI is an innovator in robotics, building field-ready AI systems and deploying real-world solutions. As a Mechanical Intern on the Hardware Team, you will design mechanical enclosures, mounts, and IP-rated solutions for sensing and compute platforms used in harsh environments.

You will work across mechanical design, CAD, thermal management, and production readiness, contributing to prototypes through production handoff. Irvine-based internship with opportunities to collaborate across teams.

Qualifications

• Current student pursuing a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
• Proficient with SolidWorks or equivalent mechanical CAD platforms.
• Familiarity with FEA and thermal modeling tools.
• Experience designing hardware for vibration, shock, and environmental exposure.
• Experience designing for CNC, sheet metal, additive manufacturing, and assembly workflows.
• Experience working across teams to integrate mechanical systems with compute, sensors, and power electronics.

Responsibilities

• Design and model mechanical structures including external enclosures and load-bearing chassis.
• Design robust sensor mounts, payload attachment points, and interfaces.
• Implement IP-rated solutions with gaskets, seals, membranes, and coatings.
• Incorporate thermal mitigation strategies and airflow guidance.
• Build SolidWorks CAD assemblies and run FEA/thermal simulations.
• Select materials and components to meet mass, strength, and manufacturability constraints.
• Develop QA checks with vendors and contract manufacturers; support integration and scaling.
