Job summary

Norfolk Southern is seeking candidates to lead and supervise field teams within locomotive shops and freight car facilities in the United States. The role emphasizes hands-on inspections, repairs, and ongoing process improvements while adhering to AAR and FRA standards.

Successful trainees graduate into Mechanical Supervisor positions, with most time spent in the field and flexible hours to meet business needs. Travel across NS'' 22-state network may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead world-class teams of approximately 8–25 skilled laborers constructing, repairing, and maintaining locomotives and rail cars.
  • During training, conduct inspections and repairs at the component level on locomotives and railcars.
  • Learn and apply Norfolk Southern, Association of American Railroads (AAR), and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) compliance standards.
  • Learn about process improvement efforts throughout Norfolk Southern.
  • Complete a six-month classroom and on-the-job supervisory training program.
  • Upon successful completion of training, become a Mechanical Supervisor at a locomotive shop or freight car repair facility.
  • Spend the majority of working time in the field rather than at a desk.

Job description

  • Lead world-class teams of approximately 8–25 skilled laborers constructing, repairing, and maintaining locomotives and rail cars
  • During training, conduct inspections and repairs at the component level on locomotives and railcars
  • Learn and apply Norfolk Southern, Association of American Railroads (AAR), and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) compliance standards
  • Learn about process improvement efforts throughout Norfolk Southern
  • Complete a six-month classroom and on-the-job supervisory training program
  • Upon successful completion of training, become a Mechanical Supervisor at a locomotive shop or freight car repair facility

Requirements

  • Preferred degree paths: Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or similar field of study
  • Willingness to relocate anywhere throughout Norfolk Southern's 22-state network
  • Availability for on-call, weekend, and shift work
  • Ability to work in a field/machine shop environment
  • Ability to travel up to 4 trips per year after the initial training program
