Job summary

Norfolk Southern invites applications for the 2027 A1 Mechanical Supervisor Trainee role. You will train in inspecting and repairing locomotives and railcars, learning compliance standards of NS, AAR and FRA, and be part of a field‑heavy, fast‑paced environment.

After six months, you graduate to Mechanical Supervisor at a locomotive shop or freight car facility. Relocation is required; candidates must be willing to move within our 22‑state network and work flexible hours as needed by business.

Responsibilities

  • Lead field teams of 8–25 laborers in locomotive and railcar work.
  • Learn inspections and component repairs on locomotives and railcars.
  • Learn NS, AAR and FRA compliance standards and process improvements.
  • Undergo six‑month classroom and on‑the‑job training, then be promoted to Mechanical Supervisor at a shop or repair facility.
  • Relocate as required after training and support a fast‑paced operating environment.

Willingness to relocate is required. Upon successful completion of the six-month training program, placement will be determined based on business needs.


Job Description

Mechanical Supervisors efficiently and effectively lead world‑class teams ranging from roughly 8-25 skilled laborers constructing, repairing, and maintaining locomotives and rail cars. During training, you will learn how to conduct inspections and repairs at the component level on both locomotives and railcars. You will become familiar with the compliance standards of NS, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). You will also learn about various process improvement efforts throughout Norfolk Southern. After a six‑month training program that includes classroom training and, on the job, supervisory training, you will be promoted to Mechanical Supervisor at either a locomotive shop or a freight car repair facility.

Work Environment


  • Willing to relocate anywhere throughout our 22-state network

  • Travel Required: up to 4 trips per year after initial training program
