Job Title: Mechanical Project Manager
Job Description
The Mechanical Project Manager will lead large-scale mechanical construction projects with a primary focus on MEP scope for hyperscale data centers valued at $20M or more. This role develops, estimates, sells, and manages multiple fast-track mechanical projects, ensuring high-quality delivery, strong profitability, and exceptional client satisfaction. The position requires direct experience managing projects of similar size and scope, as well as the ability to mentor project engineers and coordinators while collaborating closely with field and engineering teams.
Responsibilities
- Take a leadership role and full ownership of project estimates, scoping, proposals, safety, and overall execution while meeting or exceeding departmental profitability goals.
- Develop, estimate, sell, and manage multiple specialized, fast-track mechanical construction projects using effective communication, negotiation, scheduling, tracking, document control, and cost/profitability forecasting.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of mechanical systems costing and value analysis to optimize project budgets and outcomes.
- Communicate effectively with internal engineering teams to ensure complete designs that clearly convey scope within the established project budget.
- Collaborate closely with internal manufacturing and fabrication teams to maintain a cohesive, supportive, and results-driven project approach.
- Attend coordination and model review meetings as required to support project planning and execution.
- Partner with business development teams to help secure new projects and expand the client base through strong technical and commercial support.
- Develop and maintain strong client relationships, serving as a key point of contact throughout the project lifecycle.
- Review estimates prepared by direct reports and establish detailed project budgets aligned with project objectives and financial targets.
- Estimate, price, and negotiate change orders, ensuring accurate documentation and fair commercial outcomes.
- Track, forecast, and report labor hours and material costs to maintain accurate financial control and support profitability.
- Manage the buyout of major equipment and subcontractors, including negotiation, selection, and contract coordination.
- Expedite and track delivery of major equipment and materials to keep projects on schedule.
- Maintain a working knowledge of general conditions, project scope, and contract and subcontract requirements to ensure compliance and risk management.
- Control and maintain project documentation in accordance with company standards and contractual obligations.
- Collaborate with field supervision to plan, organize, and schedule work, including preparation of integrated project schedules.
- Review contract drawings, detail drawings, and technical specifications to confirm scope, quality, and constructability.
- Prepare fabrication shop work packages, including detail drawing review, material takeoffs, procurement, and fabrication labor budgeting.
- Ensure full compliance with company safety programs on all jobsites and promote a strong safety culture.
- Provide proactive, clear, and timely communication to all project stakeholders, including clients, internal teams, and subcontractors.
- Demonstrate professionalism and uphold company core values in all interactions and decisions.
- Train, mentor, and supervise Project Engineers and Project Coordinators, providing guidance and coaching for their professional development.
- Support and collaborate with superintendents, foremen, engineers, detailers, and management to deliver high-quality, profitable projects.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality as essential job functions.
Essential Skills
- 1+ years of experience as a project manager for large projects overseeing MEP scope, or 3+ years of experience as a project engineer ready for promotion to project manager.
- Experience managing industrial construction projects with a minimum of $20M in scope, preferably including hyperscale data centers.
- Direct experience managing billings and financials on construction projects, including forecasting and cost control.
- High level of technical competency in MEP scope, including mechanical systems and coordination with electrical and plumbing disciplines.
- In-depth understanding of mechanical installation sequencing in an industrial or data center environment.
- Proven experience managing and coaching project engineers and other project team members.
- Basic HVAC and plumbing engineering knowledge sufficient to review designs, sequences, and system performance.
- Ability to generate business plans and expand revenue through marketing, sales, and business development efforts.
- Strong skills in project management and construction management, including scheduling, document control, and change management.
- Proficiency in managing change orders, RFIs, and owner billings as part of overall project controls.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients, internal teams, and subcontractors.
- Demonstrated professionalism and commitment to safety and quality on all projects.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Construction Management or Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Industrial, or Chemical Engineering degree is desired.
- A minimum of three years’ experience managing project managers and project engineers is preferred.
- Experience in mechanical construction and industrial construction, including process piping and HVAC systems.
- Experience working on data center projects or similarly complex, mission-critical facilities.
- Strong client relationship-building skills and a track record of supporting business development initiatives.
- Ability to prepare detailed fabrication shop work packages, including material takeoffs and labort budgeting.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, fast-track project environment with evolving client needs.
- Capability to attend and contribute to coordination and model review meetings, including working with BIM and coordination models.
- Demonstrated ability to uphold core values such as integrity, accountability, and collaboration.
Work Environment
This is an onsite, salaried position based at a hyperscale data center project in Utah. The role typically requires approximately 50 hours per week, reflecting the demands of fast-track industrial construction and large-scale MEP coordination. The work environment is a dynamic construction site setting, involving regular interaction with field supervision, engineers, detailers, and fabrication teams. Team members collaborate closely to deliver complex mechanical and MEP systems for a mission-critical facility. The project location is approximately one hour from Salt Lake City, offering the option to live in a more urban area while working on a major data center project. The organization offers strong long-term potential, including rapid promotion opportunities (such as progression from Project Engineer to Project Manager in 2-3 years) and plans to establish a permanent office in the region, creating a stable and growth-oriented environment for career development.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Eagle Mountain, UT.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $105000.00 - $135000.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
