Job summary

Makino Inc. in Mason, Ohio is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer to lead the design and delivery of fully automated machining systems for customers.

You will integrate Makino machining centers with robotics and material handling solutions, solving complex engineering challenges hands-on. You will develop complete design packages, perform mechanical analysis, support fabrication and commissioning, and collaborate across functions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent technical experience.
  • 7+ years of mechanical design experience, including automation systems.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
  • Background in designing machinery, automation, or robotic integration.

Responsibilities

  • Design automation equipment such as end-of-arm tooling, conveyors, safety systems, and layouts.
  • Develop complete design packages (3D models, drawings, BOMs, documentation).
  • Perform mechanical analysis (tolerance stack-ups, stress, deflection).
  • Conduct robot reach studies and support system layout development.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, suppliers, and customers from concept through acceptance.
  • Support fabrication, assembly, and troubleshooting of automated systems.
  • Lead design reviews and contribute to project cost estimates and proposals.
  • Troubleshoot issues and provide cost-effective solutions.
  • Stay current on emerging automation technologies and recommend improvements.

What You’ve Done

As a Mechanical Project Engineer, you’ll lead the design and execution of automation systems that integrate Makino machining centers with robotics and material handling solutions. Key responsibilities include:

  • Design automation equipment such as end-of-arm tooling, conveyors, safety systems, and system layouts
  • Develop complete design packages (3D models, drawings, BOMs, documentation)
  • Perform mechanical analysis (tolerance stack-ups, stress, deflection, etc.)
  • Conduct robot reach studies and support system layout development
  • Partner with internal engineering teams, suppliers, and customers from concept through final system acceptance
  • Support fabrication, assembly, and troubleshooting of automated systems
  • Lead design reviews and contribute to project cost estimates and proposals
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and provide practical, cost-effective solutions
  • Stay current on emerging automation technologies and recommend design improvements
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (preferred) or equivalent technical experience
  • 7+ years of mechanical design experience, including automation systems
  • Strong experience with CAD tools (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar)
  • Background in designing machinery, automation systems, or robotic integration
  • Knowledge of pneumatic systems, mechanical components, and system design
  • Familiarity with industry standards (OSHA, ANSI, ISO, CE, RIA)
  • Experience troubleshooting and solving complex engineering problems
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%
