Job summary

Helion is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer to own capital projects from concept through startup in our West Virginia manufacturing facility. You will partner with operations, maintenance and suppliers to deliver safe, reliable equipment on the plant floor.

The role emphasizes hands-on problem solving, rigorous project management, and ensuring safety, quality and environmental standards while driving uptime and performance improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of project engineering experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or heavy industrial environment.
  • Proven experience managing capital projects from design through startup.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, equipment drawings, mechanical layouts, and construction documents.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical capital projects from planning through commissioning and handoff to operations.
  • Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, and contractor performance.
  • Develop equipment specifications and oversee installation of new manufacturing equipment.
  • Coordinate equipment modifications, facility improvements, and process upgrades.
  • Support equipment selection, layout, piping, HVAC, utilities, structural interfaces, and material handling systems.
  • Review engineering drawings, vendor submittals, and technical documentation.
  • Work closely with maintenance and operations to minimize downtime during installations.
  • Drive project execution while ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues and implement long-term reliability improvements.
  • Coordinate vendors, suppliers, and engineering firms throughout project execution.
  • Support equipment startup, commissioning, testing, and performance validation.

This is a highly visible role where you'll partner with operations, maintenance, contractors, and engineering teams to execute projects that improve safety, reliability, and production performance.

What You'll Do

What We're Looking For

  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems including pumps, piping, rotating equipment, conveyors, HVAC, utilities, and process equipment.
  • Experience working with contractors, vendors, and cross-functional operations teams.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, equipment drawings, mechanical layouts, and construction documents.
  • Strong project management, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Comfortable working both in an office and on the manufacturing floor.
