Job summary

New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, NM seeks a Mechanical/Plumbing/HVAC Technician to maintain campus facilities, including boilers, chillers, compressors, the Facility Management System (FMS), and related equipment, plus campus plumbing and domestic water systems.

Under supervision, you will plan work, monitor equipment, perform repairs, install and service HVAC and plumbing components, read gauges, keep maintenance records, and support safety by keeping spaces clean and compliant with codes.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Monitors and maintains Facility Management System (FMS) and inspects work activities; plans and develops work schedules, equipment usage, and procedures for maintenance.
• Repairs, maintains, inspects, and installs HVAC systems including boilers, chillers, and compressors; checks, services, and repairs HVAC equipment and facilities management system; reads gauges and adjusts valves/controls/pumps to regulate systems; conducts tests and performs planned maintenance on refrigeration equipment.
• Installs, repairs, and maintains plumbing and domestic water systems; inspects joints, valves, pumps, boilers, heaters, sinks, commodes, tanks, and other components; operates plumbing tools to repair/maintain systems.
• Keeps records of repairs and future service needs.
• Performs minor electrical repairs and tests; inspects firefighting equipment and fire alarm systems; maintains plant and facilities in a safe, clean condition.

Job description

TITLE: MECHANICAL/PLUMBING/HVAC TECHNICIAN

REPORTS TO: VICE PRESIDENT OF OPERATIONS AND SPECIAL PROJECTS

SUMMARY

• Under basic supervision, works with others in performing maintenance and repairs of plant facilities, including but not limited to boilers, chillers, compressors, Facility Management System (FMS), and related equipment, as well as maintaining campus plumbing and domestic water systems and HVAC systems. An employee in this class may train and direct the work of other laborers, general repair workers, and other trades helpers and personnel.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Monitors and maintains Facility Management System (FMS) and inspects the work activities of any assigned project; plans and develops work schedules, equipment usage schedules, and procedures for equipment maintenance.
• Performs repair, maintenance, inspection, and installation of HVAC systems including but not limited to boilers, chillers, and compressors; checks, services, and repairs HVAC equipment and facilities management system; reads gauges and instruments and adjusts mechanisms such as valves, controls, and pumps to control level of fluid pressure and distribution in systems; tests malfunctioning systems and components; performs planned maintenance, regular servicing, and repairs to refrigeration equipment of all types, sizes, and temperature ranges.
• Installs, repairs, and maintains plumbing and domestic water systems; inspects joints, valves, pumps, boilers, heaters, sinks, commodes, tanks, valves, and other plumbing system components to locate malfunctions and repairs or replaces when necessary; operates a variety of plumbing equipment and hand tools such as snakes, threaders, etc. to repair/maintain systems.
• Maintains records of repairs or equipment requiring future service.
• Performs minor electrical repairs and testing; inspects and tests all firefighting equipment and fire alarm systems; maintains the plant, mechanical rooms, tunnels, maintenance shop, and all job locations in a safe, clean, and orderly manner.
• May serve on various campus committees as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• New Mexico Journeyman JPG and New Mexico Boilers 2 Operators License
• Must possess a valid New Mexico or Texas driver’s license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of all applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
• Knowledge of the mechanical operation of equipment such as pumps, boilers, heaters, other plumbing components, HVAC or refrigeration tools, materials, and test equipment.
• Knowledge of math sufficient to estimate labor and material costs for planned projects.
• Skill in installing, repairing, and maintaining all types of plumbing and mechanical systems.
• Skill in reading and understanding schematics.
• Skill in analyzing HVAC or refrigeration malfunctions from performance and test equipment readings and determining appropriate repairs.
• Skill in leading the work activities of self and others.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students, and the public.
• Ability to prioritize projects, coordinate multiple requests, adhere to deadlines, and coordinate projects with carpenters, electricians, millwork, and other trades to reach project completion.
• Ability to maintain appropriate records of time and materials sufficient to report daily, weekly, and monthly progress.
• Ability to maintain and repair hand and power tools sufficient to ensure their availability and safe operation for projects.
• Ability to perform work involving regular physical activity.
• Positions may require the ability to move up to 50 pounds safely, work on heights of 6 feet, and drive a forklift, truck, or other equipment.
