Converse College is seeking a Lead HVAC Technician to oversee HVAC/R service across campus facilities. You will supervise staff, coordinate maintenance, and ensure safe operation of boilers, chillers, and controls while delivering exceptional service to the Converse community.
The role requires EPA Type 2 certification, 4 years of HVAC experience, physical ability to lift, climb, and work in varied environments. On-site hours are listed; on-call responsibilities may apply.
The Lead HVAC Technician will work in all areas of HVAC/R service and maintenance including but not limited to: boilers, chillers, split systems, roof top systems, domestic hot water, mini-splits, automation and controls, pumps, valves, electrical, duct, piping, etc. The position requires performing diverse activities involving the repair and maintenance of HVAC/R equipment and facilities as well as designating and monitoring/supervising the work of personnel in order to complete assigned work on all campus HVAC/R facilities and equipment. Will require work inside and outside in all environmental conditions. This role has direct contact with the Converse Community and requires exceptional customer service abilities. In the absence of the HVAC Supervisor the Lead HVAC Technician will supervise personnel and serve as the point of contact.
Position requires performance of complex duties involving all aspects of HVAC, mechanical, electronic/electrical systems, including Energy Management systems, repair, trouble-shooting, installation and preventive maintenance measures. The Lead HVAC Technician will promote teamwork, cooperation, and work to resolve challenges; the position requires work in a variety of environments and conditions. Occasionally required to perform work in support of other trades and Facilities divisions as necessary to support the objectives of the university.
Must have minimum Type 2 EPA Certification and 4 years of experience in HVAC maintenance and/or service. Must have the ability to lift 50lbs and be able to climb ladders and frequently walk, push, pull, kneel, crawl, stand, reach, and lift. Must be able to work safely around and with high voltage and high-pressure equipment. Must be able to work safely at height above 30 feet. Must be able to work in cramped spaces. Valid driver's license required.
Associates degree in HVAC or closely related field and a minimum of 4 years of related experience or high school diploma and 8 years of related experience. EPA Universal refrigerant certification. Campus facilities experience in a higher education environment; vocational/trade experience/training; experience with computerized maintenance management systems; knowledge of 3 phase power systems, building code and ASHRAE standards; prior supervisory experience a plus. Experience with boilers and chillers in 2-pipe and 4-pipe configurations. Experience with building automation and HVAC controls.
Applicant should have knowledge and experience in all fields of HVAC including heat pump, package, and split systems, boilers, chillers, pumps, building exhaust systems, controls systems and software.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction. Must be able to read and work from prints and specifications and have knowledge of typical HVAC and associated electrical and other tools, materials, and equipment. Must have a good work ethic, positive attitude, professional appearance.
Must have experience with industry standard safety practices and principles, and must adhere to same as well as to relevant Federal, State, and Local codes and University procedures.
Under limited supervision employee will perform HVAC and related duties of considerable difficulty requiring a high degree of skill and technical knowledge in specialized HVAC and related areas.
Must be available to work on-call on a rotating schedule with other technicians. This position is considered essential personnel and may be required to work during adverse weather conditions and other emergency situations. Must perform work in adverse conditions and limited access areas including at height, on lifts, ladders and platforms and areas such as crawl spaces, attics and equipment areas. May be hot or cold.
