The Gilbert Power Plant comprises one 288 MW natural gas four-on-one combined-cycle train, as well as a 152 MW oil/gas-fired simple-cycle combustion turbine peaking unit. Located on a 232-acre site adjacent to the Delaware River in Hunterdon County. Originally commissioned in the 1920s as a coal-fired plant, it underwent a conversion in 1970 to utilize oil as its primary fuel and subsequently transitioned to natural gas.

Opportunity Summary

The Mechanical Maintenance Technician / Welder plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of plant operations through expert welding, fabrication, and mechanical maintenance. This hands-on position involves working with combustion turbines, auxiliary systems, and industrial piping while performing critical repairs and precision troubleshooting. Ideal candidates are problem-solvers with a strong commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence in a fast-paced power generation environment.

Primary Functions

Your scope of responsibility as Mechanical Maintenance Technician/ Welder will include the following primary functions:

  • Perform complex mechanical maintenance and construction tasks to ensure the reliability and efficiency of plant buildings, structures, and equipment.
  • Maintain, install, and repair critical plant equipment, including boilers, pumps, compressors, steam and combustion turbines, condensers, heat exchangers, fuel and ash handling systems, gasoline and diesel engines, and hydraulic control systems.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on plant infrastructure, including foundations, floors, walls, fences, doors, roofs, signs, walkways, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
  • Operate plant equipment such as vehicles, cranes, and hoists to support maintenance and construction tasks.
  • Carry out pipefitting, pipe covering, insulating, and incidental machining using various shop tools and equipment.
  • Perform cutting, burning, brazing, and welding on structures, equipment, and materials, ensuring compliance with certification requirements for code-regulated welding.
  • Supervise and direct assigned personnel assisting with maintenance and construction tasks.
  • Complete routine clerical work, including logging activities, preparing field and time reports, and submitting material requisitions.
  • Adapt to temporary work assignments within the occupational group when primary responsibilities are delayed or interrupted.
  • Assist with other tasks during emergency conditions, ensuring safety for oneself and colleagues.
  • Perform other reasonable duties and responsibilities as assigned by Management to support organizational goals and objectives.

Working Relationships

The Welder / Mechanical Maintenance Technician reports to the Maintenance Manager and takes general direction from the management team. Additionally, this position will coordinate with all other plant personnel to ensure safe and reliable plant operations.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions

Physical requirements include the possibility of standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. Must be able to be respirator qualified. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Occasional travel as needed to support operations and maintenance activities at other power plant assets.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

This position offers a Monday to Friday work schedule, during regular dayshift hours. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

Initial starting compensation will range from $48.18 to $53.47 per hour as per CBA, and will include an annual performance bonus.

Job Qualification

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment, as typically acquired in four years of high school.
  • Possess or be able to obtain certification in structural and pipe welding (e.g., AWS D1.1 or ASME Section IX) for carbon and stainless steel, ensuring compliance with industry standards and plant requirements.
  • Skilled in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG), and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG) for fabricating, repairing, and maintaining structural components, piping systems, and plant equipment, ensuring adherence to industry standards and safety regulations.
  • Proficient in advanced welding techniques, including cutting, burning, and brazing, with expertise in working on code-regulated structures, equipment, and specialized alloys used in a generating station. Fully qualified in the operation of sophisticated welding equipment to meet certification requirements.
  • Extensive experience in a technician-level role within a power generation facility, specifically working with combustion turbines, auxiliary systems, and related equipment.
  • Proficiency in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, including turbine-generators, microprocessors, and related components, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
  • Experience with industrial piping systems – Knowledge of pipe materials, installation techniques, and pressure testing.
  • Proficiency in rigging and lifting operations – Experience using cranes, hoists, and other lifting equipment to move heavy components safely.
  • Knowledge of preventive and predictive maintenance techniques – Familiarity with vibration analysis, thermography, and other condition-based monitoring methods.
  • Thorough understanding of safety protocols, including Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures, OSHA requirements, and environmental compliance standards.
  • Strong analytical abilities to identify, diagnose, and resolve issues effectively under pressure.
  • Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver's license, ensuring it remains in good standing at all times.
