Job summary

The Frederick National Laboratory operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. is seeking a Mechanical Insulator to install, maintain, repair, and remove insulation on piping, equipment, ductwork, tanks, and vessels to ensure energy efficiency, safety, and reliability of facility systems.

The role requires reading drawings and specifications, selecting appropriate materials, coordinating with maintenance, operations, and contractors, and upholding safety and quality standards on all assignments.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; Foreign degrees evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience related to the Key Roles/Responsibilities.
• Experience performing mechanical insulation installation, maintenance, repair, replacement, and removal.
• Basic knowledge of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) and safe work practices around ACM.
• Reading and interpreting drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
• Ability to safely operate hand and power tools, ladders, and lifts.
• Must possess and maintain a valid State Driver's License.
• This position is safety-sensitive and requires random drug testing.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain, repair, replace, and remove insulation on piping, mechanical equipment, ductwork, tanks, vessels, and other facility systems.
• Measure, cut, fabricate, fit, and secure insulation materials per drawings and manufacturer requirements.
• Install protective coverings, jacketing, vapor barriers and weather barriers.
• Remove existing or damaged insulation and prepare surfaces for repair or replacement.
• Inspect insulation systems for damage or deficiencies and take corrective actions.
• Verify completed work for proper fit, coverage and quality.
• Read and interpret basic drawings and technical documentation.
• Safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, aerial lifts and equipment.
• Troubleshoot insulation-related problems and complete routine assignments with limited supervision.
• Maintain work areas, tools, materials, and equipment in a safe, clean condition.
• Follow safety procedures, work-control requirements, PPE, and facility policies.
• Coordinate insulation activities with maintenance, operations, engineering and other trades.
• Communicate work status and material needs to supervisors and stakeholders.
• Perform other duties to support facility maintenance and operations.
