Job summary

City of Detroit, within the Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department, seeks a Mechanical Inspector to enforce mechanical codes for heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air-conditioning systems. The role involves inspecting equipment, reviewing plans, and ensuring compliance with city ordinances and accepted standards.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED with advanced engineering training and at least two years’ experience in heating/air-conditioning

Qualifications

• High school graduation or GED with 2 years of advanced training in engineering principles and practical application to refrigeration, air-conditioning, combustion control, and space heating distribution systems.
• Two years of experience in installation, construction, maintenance, operation, and repair of heating, refrigeration, and air-conditioning equipment and systems.
• Apprenticeship in heating and refrigeration mechanics preferred; additional training in engineering earned at college may be considered equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Inspect heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air-conditioning equipment for compliance with codes and approved plans.
• Report findings, secure corrections, or issue violation notices.
• Witness equipment acceptance tests and testifying in court as needed.
• Check proper licensure of boiler and refrigeration plant operating personnel and investigate violations.
