Job summary

Powell Service Division seeks a Field Service Technician to support installation, testing and servicing of switchgear and power control rooms across the continental US.

The role requires two or more years of electrical tech experience, travel up to 85%, and the ability to work in diverse roles from in-house fabrication to team leadership on installations.

Candidates must follow safety standards, complete documentation, and coordinate with project management and customers.

Qualifications

  • Two or more years as a shop or field electrical/breaker technician.
  • Basic knowledge of ANSI IEEE C37 standards for breakers and switchgear.
  • Familiar with ANSI IEEE device function numbers and ampacities in switchgear applications.
  • Ability to write accurate test reports and project summaries.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to safety and quality standards.
  • Complete site documentation such as weekly time sheets and service/repair orders.
  • Communicate work schedule to Field Operations Scheduler and District Service Manager.
  • Maintain flexible hours including overtime and weekends.
  • Travel up to 85% of the year.
  • Comply with SOPs and safety protocols.
  • Coordinate with project management, customers, vendors, and labor support.
  • Support fabrication in-house and oversee small crews on installations.
  • Install switchgear and PCR equipment.
  • Perform insulation, Hi-Potential, torque, and functional testing.
  • Inspect vehicles and calibrated tools regularly.
  • Support services manufacturing group with construction, installation, wiring and testing.
  • Duties will include local and domestic travel, PCR and switchgear installation, PowlVac breakers, troubleshooting, testing and repair.

Job description

Essential Responsibilities
  • Adhere to Powell’s current safety and quality standards
  • Complete all site documentation in a timely manner; including but not limited to, weekly time sheets, signed service and repair order, materials used and report writing.
  • Provide regular and clear communication regarding work schedule to Field Operations Scheduler and District Service Manager
  • Maintain flexible work hours, which will include over time and periodic weekend support
  • Must be available to travel up to 85% of the year.
  • Comply with Powell‘s standard operating procedures, documentation processes, safety processes and protocols.
  • Coordinate with Powell Project management, customers, vendors, and labor support in a professional and customer-centric manner
  • Able to work in different roles from supporting the Manufacturing Department within house fabrication, to overseeing small crews on installation projects.
  • Switchgear and PCR installations
  • DC / AC Switchgear
  • Perform performance testing on Powell equipment and components, including but not limited to; insulation testing (megger testing), Ductor, Hi Potential testing, torque tests and mechanical / functional testing.
  • Perform regular inspections of any issued vehicle or calibrated equipment/tools.
  • Provide support to services manufacturing group. May consist of construction, installation, wiring and testing.
  • Duties will include local and domestic travel, PCR installation, switchgear installation, PowlVac breakers, also trouble shooting, testing and repair of mentioned items.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Field service technicians are required to have two or more years as a shop and / or field electrical / breaker technician.
  • Exhibit basic knowledge of Electrical Industry manufacturing standards. Specific standards include sections of ANSI IEEE C37 applicable to the design and manufacture of breakers and switchgear.
  • Basic knowledge of the following: ANSI IEEE device function numbers; ampacities of electrical conductors in switchgear applications
  • Basic knowledge of electrical air and surface creepage clearance requirements.
  • Basic knowledge in writing accurate and complete test reports, project summaries and has the ability to explain basic anomalies found on a given project.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic familiarity with contactor and circuit breaker schematics (Preferred).
  • Basic understanding of hi potential testing (Preferred)
  • Basic understanding of low resistance testing (Preferred).
  • Basic working knowledge of mechanical and electrical functional testing of circuit breakers and electrical switchgear (Preferred).
  • NICET Level 1 certification (Preferred).
  • HUET / Offshore Survival Training (Will be provided if the candidate is not currently certified).
  • NFPA 70E Trained (Preferred / Training can be provided).
  • OSHA 10 / 30 Trained (Preferred / Training can be provided)
Skills, Abilities & Other Requirements

Demonstrate basic knowledge in the design and manufacture of bus and structural modification projects. Demonstrate knowledge of basic electrical theory and control circuits i.e.: Ohm's Law; Basic AC and DC theory. Ability to assist other senior level technicians with maintenance, repair, installation, upgrades and retro fills on Powell switchgear and power control rooms

The Field Service Technician typically performs duties in an industrial environment. This position requires services both locally and across the Continental US.   • Have full range of mobility in upper and lower body and be able to work in various positions, including, but not limited to, stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling and squatting for extended periods of time.
  • Work at heights greater than 10’.
  • Work on ladders of all types.
  • Work on scissors and bucket lifts (on occasion).

In addition, employees will be required to complete and pass Company and Customer required drug screening, background and employment verification checks, maintaining eligibility throughout employment.
