Job summary

ASI is seeking a Mechanical Fabricator and Technician in Birmingham, AL to support a multidisciplinary team in building custom automated and robotic systems.

The role requires fabricating, painting, assembling, troubleshooting, installing and supporting automation systems with attention to detail and efficiency. Candidates should be self-motivated and capable of working both independently and in teams.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in welding or related field preferred.
• 2+ years hands-on experience in mechanical fabrication and assembly.
• Experience reading mechanical drawings and schematics.

• MIG and TIG weld mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum per specs.

Job Details: Job Location: ASI - Birmingham, AL 35211, The Mechanical Fabricator and Technician at ASI supports a multidisciplinary team in the building of custom automated and robotic systems. Candidates will be expected to fabricate, paint, assemble, troubleshoot, install and support automation systems. Prospective candidates must demonstrate technical expertise and a strong attention to detail and efficiency. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and capable of working within a team as well as independently; able to manage multiple assignments simultaneously.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Mechanical Fabrication and Assembly

• Mig and Tig weld mild steel, stainless steel and occasionally aluminum parts and assemblies to specifications based on mechanical prints and technical drawings.
• Prepare and paint parts and assemblies per mechanical prints.
• Read and interpret mechanical blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics to assemble components and systems.
• Use hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring equipment to assemble complex mechanical systems to exact specifications.
• Utilize manual machining equipment to modify and machine parts to mechanical specifications.

Collaboration

• Report directly to the Mechanical Engineering Manager regarding most daily tasks.
• Take indirect supervision and tasks from others on the ASI management and engineering teams as needed for project specific work.
• Interface directly with customers to address and solve their needs and provide high-quality services.
• Engage actively in team meetings and process optimization initiatives.
• Offer suggestions on improving build processes, part designs, or equipment reliability.
• Take part in cross-training or skill development sessions as needed.

Safety Compliance and Housekeeping

• Always maintain a safe and organized work environment.
• Follow company and OSHA guidelines on PPE, tool usage, and mechanical safety.
• Participate in safety briefings and report hazards immediately.
• Keep work areas clean and ensure tools are properly maintained and stored.

Prototype Support and Engineering Collaboration

• Work alongside multidisciplinary team members during assembly of prototype units from initial concept models or design revisions.
• Provide real-time input on ease of assembly, component fit, and potential design improvements.
• Assist in functional testing and documentation of early-stage equipment.

Equipment Installation and Alignment

• Support the installation of mechanical systems both in-house and at customer sites.
• Install components, frames, and assemblies in accordance with site plans and technical instructions.
• Test system movement, fit, and function under simulated or live conditions.
• Participate in machine startup, tuning, and functional verification processes.
• Work with engineers, electricians, and software teams to achieve full system readiness.

Troubleshooting and Repairs

• Diagnose mechanical failures and implement corrective action to minimize downtime.
• Identify root causes by inspecting mechanical wear, stress points, and system output.
• Repair or replace parts such as belts, gears, bearings, valves, and seals
• Validate repairs through testing and communicate outcomes with the engineering team.

Education

• Associate’s degree in Welding, Mechanical Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or a related technical field preferred.

Experience

• 2+ years of hands‑on experience in mechanical fabrication, assembly, maintenance, and industrial machinery. Working in a manufacturing or automation environment is a plus.
• Experience with reading and interpreting mechanical drawings and schematics.
• Experience Mig and Tig welding of mild steel and stainless steel to specifications is a must.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with familiarity in tools, fasteners, and fabrication practices.
• Skilled in diagnosing mechanical problems and implementing effective solutions.
• Basic understanding of pneumatics, hydraulics, and mechanical power transmission

Certifications

• OSHA 10/30 certification preferred.
• Forklift or lift operation certification is a plus.
• Any relevant manufacturer‑specific mechanical or safety certifications are a plus.
