The candidate will review plans, conduct site visits, perform takeoffs, and manage bid documentation while building a network of qualified subcontractors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • Experience estimating mechanical and plumbing systems in heavy civil or industrial construction.
  • Ability to develop detailed takeoffs and bid packages.

Responsibilities

  • Review plans, specs, and bidding docs to define project scope.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings and visit project sites to assess conditions.

Mechanical Estimator - Manhattan, NY with a leading NYC-based heavy civil contractor, focused on public infrastructure projects such as transit, utilities, and energy. The position involves preparing detailed cost estimates, supporting bid strategies, and working closely with senior teams on high-impact projects.

This well-established heavy civil contractor is a leading player in New York's public infrastructure market, with active projects across transit, utilities, airports, and energy sectors. With decades of experience and strong client relationships, they are known for delivering complex public works projects for agencies such as the MTA, DOT, and Port Authority.

They are looking to hire a skillled Mechanical Estimator - Manhattan, NY to support their growing pipeline of public infrastructure and utility work. This role offers the opportunity to learn directly from senior estimators and work on meaningful projects that shape New York's infrastructure.

Description
  • Review plans, specifications, and bidding documents to develop a complete understanding of project scope and requirements.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings, visit project sites, and assess existing conditions to support accurate estimating.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors and vendors while expanding a network of qualified partners.
  • Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotations to ensure complete project coverage.
  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for labor, material, and equipment.
  • Develop labor productivity estimates, equipment costs, and overall project pricing.
  • Complete estimating worksheets and review estimates for accuracy, completeness, and competitiveness prior to final bid submission.
  • Prepare bid packages, proposals, qualifications, and related documentation.
  • Assist with constructability reviews, value engineering efforts, means and methods evaluations, and budgeting exercises.
  • Maintain estimating databases and historical cost information for future reference.
  • Support project buyout activities and facilitate the successful handoff of awarded projects to operations teams.
Profile
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of technical training and relevant experience.
  • Experience estimating mechanical and plumbing systems within Power Generation, Commercial HVAC, Oil & Gas, Water & Wastewater, or Industrial construction environments.
Working knowledge of mechanical and plumbing systems, including:
  • Domestic water, chilled water, steam, natural gas, fuel oil, sanitary waste, compressed air, fire protection, and process piping systems.
  • Common pipe joining methods, including threaded, flanged, grooved, welded, brazed, soldered, compression, and fusion systems.
  • Various piping materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, ductile iron, fiberglass, and plastic piping systems including PVC, CPVC, and HDPE.
