Job summary

Thomas Young Group in Chicago is seeking an experienced estimator to join our mechanical/HVAC team. You will review project plans and specifications to create detailed, accurate cost estimates for materials, labor, equipment, and overhead, including all implied or hidden work.

You will lead and mentor junior estimators, collaborate across teams, and negotiate vendor and subcontractor pricing. You will maintain and update cost databases, spot opportunities for value engineering, and prepare bid

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in mechanical or HVAC estimation.
• Experience across healthcare, commercial, residential, or mission critical buildings.
• Based in or within commuting distance to Chicago.

What you'll be doing:

Review project plans and specifications to create detailed, accurate cost estimates for materials, labor, equipment, and overhead, including all implied or hidden work

Lead and mentor junior estimators while collaborating across teams

Solicit, compare, and negotiate vendor and subcontractor pricing. Keep cost databases up to date and spot opportunities for value engineering without compromising code or system performance

Prepare bid proposals, support budget forecasting, attend pre-bid and site meetings, and ensure a smooth handoff to project management and construction teams

What we're looking for:

5+ years of experience in mechanical or HVAC estimation

Experience across multiple building sectors such as healthcare, commercial, residential, or mission critical

Based in or within commuting distance to Chicago

Strong attention to detail and a collaborative approach
