Cummins Inc. seeks a Mechanical Engineering Technician for the OCU to support engine and component testing at our Columbus, IN site. You will execute tests, configure data systems, analyze results, and deliver actionable findings to support product development.

You will lead test activities, diagnose issues, and work with engineers and suppliers to improve processes while ensuring safety and quality across testing operations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent; OR an associate degree with 2+ years of relevant experience; OR a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Department of Labor Certification or equivalent professional credential acceptable.
  • Experience in engine/component testing and data-driven problem solving.

Responsibilities

  • Drive engine, component, system and controls testing to validate designs.
  • Configure data acquisition systems and analyze results for insights.
  • Lead test execution: design plans, run tests, document results, present conclusions.
  • Diagnose root causes and implement corrective actions to keep projects moving.
  • Build and instrument engines; inspect, measure, modify and validate components.
  • Lead continuous improvement and maintain quality procedures.
  • Collaborate with engineers, technicians, suppliers and customers.

Job description

We are looking for a talented Mechanical Engineering Technician - OCU - Technical - 3x12 AM Shift to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Cummins Inc. facility in Columbus, IN.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Drive product quality, performance, and reliability by executing engine, component, system, and controls testing that validates designs and supports the development of high-performing products.
  • Generate data-driven insights and recommendations by configuring data acquisition systems, analyzing test results, developing analysis tools, and translating findings into actionable engineering decisions.
  • Lead comprehensive test execution activities by designing test plans, configuring test programs, conducting testing, documenting results, and delivering clear conclusions and recommendations.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical challenges by identifying root causes of engine, component, system, control, and test cell issues and implementing effective corrective actions to keep projects moving forward.
  • Support product development through hands-on technical expertise by building, instrumenting, inspecting, measuring, modifying, and validating engines and components throughout the testing lifecycle.
  • Improve operational efficiency and engineering processes by leading continuous improvement initiatives, maintaining quality procedures, participating in audits, and implementing best practices that enhance testing effectiveness.
  • Strengthen cross-functional collaboration and knowledge sharing by working closely with engineers, suppliers, customers, technicians, and apprentices to align priorities, solve problems, and develop team capability.
  • Ensure safe, compliant, and high-quality test operations by adhering to safety standards, protecting confidential information, coordinating testing activities, and maintaining accurate documentation that supports successful project outcomes.

  • Execute testing with precision and technical excellence by ensuring proper test setup, test article builds, equipment calibration, and data acquisition processes that generate reliable and trustworthy results.
  • Leverage strong problem-solving and decision-making skills to diagnose issues, identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and prevent recurring problems that could impact product performance or test quality.
  • Analyze and communicate data effectively by producing clear, accurate reports that enable engineers, customers, and stakeholders to make informed decisions based on test outcomes.
  • Manage complex technical challenges with confidence by interpreting test requirements, troubleshooting equipment and systems, and making sound decisions in fast-paced and demanding environments.
  • Drive results with initiative and accountability by taking ownership of testing activities, adapting to new challenges, meeting commitments, and consistently delivering high-quality outcomes.
  • Support operational excellence through maintenance and data quality by applying preventive and predictive maintenance practices, ensuring equipment readiness, and maintaining high standards of data integrity.
  • Collaborate effectively across diverse teams by communicating clearly, valuing different perspectives, mentoring others when appropriate, and building strong partnerships with engineers, technicians, suppliers, and customers.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent required with Department of Labor Certification OR Associates degree from an accredited program in a related field and at least two years of relevant experience OR Bachelors degree in a related field.

Experience:

  • Department of Labor Certification OR four year experience/education requirement accomplished through either Bachelors degree in related field OR associates degree in related field and at least two years of relevant experience.

Actively participate in daily 5S efforts

Maintain a clean, neat, orderly, and productive workspace.

Maintain daily test cell and work order logbooks.

Consistently run daily Test Readiness Verification (TRV)

Consistently update Multi-State Utilization (MSU) Board

Consistently review/approve timecard.

Maintain good relations, communication, and a spirit of collaboration with customers and cross-functional departments.

Maintain engines on test

Complete all mandatory training by required deadlines
