Job summary

Cummins Inc. in Columbus, IN seeks a Cross-functional Engineering Associate to contribute to Battery Cell Technology and Power Electronics Laboratories.

The role involves designing, testing, and troubleshooting analog and digital circuits, interfacing with customers and suppliers, and leading improvement projects on-site. Ideal candidates have education in related fields and experience with CAN communications and power electronics.

Job description

We are looking for a talented Cross-functional Engineering Associate to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Cummins Inc. facility in Columbus, IN.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Independently builds and debugs new analog and digital circuit designs.
  • Analyzes and repairs circuit boards, including fine pitch.
  • Troubleshoots circuits of moderate to advanced complexity.
  • Performs tests on circuit design using approved test equipment and test setups.
  • Builds wiring assemblies and supports mechanical assemblies to house electronic circuits-flex-tester, load boxes, life test, racks, etc. Uses advanced electronics diagnostics and test equipment such as logic analyzers, probes, and digital oscilloscopes\. Reports on test results.
  • Understands and applies appropriate company and department rules and guidelines to work.
  • Works with and train apprentices and technicians.
  • Interfaces with customers, suppliers, engineers, and other functions.
  • Coordinates programs including planning, scheduling, ordering, and tracking. Participates in the maintenance of quality procedures.
  • Leads and participates in improvement projects.
  • Develops and gives presentations to customers and suppliers.
  • Knows and complies with departmental and company safety policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates confidentiality as required.
  • Participates in self- and team-audits and associated corrective action.
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties, as required, to get the job done.

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Data Acquisition - Prepares samples, verifies equipment calibration and performs tests according to an approved standard procedure or work instruction in a manner which ensures, and results in, data that can be trusted and delivered to the engineer or customer.
  • Data Reporting - Prepares documentation in a manner which clearly organizes and presents testing methods, instrument settings, the data and analysis to allow the engineer and customer to understand the results and form accurate conclusions and recommendations.
  • Product Problem Solving - Solves product problems using a process that protects the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; and identifies the systemic root causes and recommended actions to prevent problem reoccurrence.
  • Product Software Design and Construction - Constructs product software using industry best practices and robust software engineering principles; verifies software updates to ensure quality products.
  • Collaborates - Building partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives.
  • Communicates effectively - Developing and delivering multi-mode communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences.

High school diploma, GED or equivalent required with Department of Labor Certification OR

Associates degree from an accredited program in a related field and at least two years of relevant experience OR Bachelors degree in a related field.

Experience:

Department of Labor Certification OR four year experience/education requirement accomplished through either Bachelors degree in related field OR associates degree in related field and at least two years of relevant experience.

This position will split their time between the Battery Cell Technology (BCT) and Power Electronics Laboratories (PEL).

In addition to the key responsibilities above, this position will be expected to operate and maintain equipment in both labs.

Experience using CAN communications is required.

Preferred experience includes:

  • Lab organization, time-management, and optimizing work throughput.
  • Experience with interpreting circuit schematics.
  • Experience with electrical drives, DC/DC converters, and related power electronics technologies.
  • Experience with data processing and programming.
