Job summary

Cummins Inc. is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Technical Support Specialist for our Columbus, IN facility. You will disassemble and rebuild engines, configure data acquisition systems, and analyze data to support production and testing activities.

Responsibilities

  • Disassembles and rebuilds production and experimental engines and components; measures and records measurements.
  • Configures and operates data acquisition systems; analyzes data for appropriateness.
  • Installs engines and components in test cells or test rigs; assists in setup, execution and teardown.
  • Fabricates piping, tubing, and brackets from prints/drawings as needed.
  • Diagnoses engine and test cell problems; implements corrective actions.
  • Maintains data quality and reports results clearly to engineers and customers.
  • Supports technicians and engineers; interfaces with customers, suppliers, and other functions.
  • Participates in quality procedures audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensures safe, clean, and organized work area; follows PPE and safety policies.
  • Performs other duties as required to support operational needs.

Job description

We are looking for a talented Mechanical Engineering Technical Support Specialist to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Cummins Inc. facility in Columbus, IN.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
  • Disassembles and rebuilds production and experimental engines and components, measures and records measurements.
  • Configures and operates data acquisition systems; analyzes and reviews data for appropriateness.
  • Installs engines and components in test cells or test rigs.
  • Fabricates necessary piping, tubing, and brackets from prints and drawings.
  • Diagnoses engine and test cell problems.
  • Configures and operates engines or rigs, measuring and recording data as requested, and performs preventative maintenance on engines, test cells or test rigs.
  • Executes written work requests and reports on results in a specified format.
  • Supports technicians and engineers as required.
  • Understands and applies appropriate Company and department rules and guidelines to work.
  • Interfaces with customers, suppliers, engineers and other functions.
  • Participates in the maintenance of quality procedures.
  • Participates in improvement projects.
  • Develops and gives presentations to customers and suppliers.
  • Maintains cleanliness within the workplace.

  • Product Function Test System Design - Interprets test equipment specifications from test standards or lab customer requirements; selects and integrates appropriate equipment, instrumentation and software to control boundary conditions and collect measurement data; assesses capability of the lab equipment against the requirements and support infrastructure.
  • Test Setup and Configuration - Interprets test plan to determine optimal location and orientation within a test space in accordance with local safety and environmental requirements and fabricates required system with appropriate materials.
  • Test Article Build - Assembles test articles according to test requirements, including all necessary installation or accommodations for instrumentation, in a manner that allows the test articles to successfully undergo product functional test.
  • Preventative and Predictive Maintenance - Interprets machine and tool maintenance records and data to develop and execute preventative and predictive management strategies to drive continuous improvement within the manufacturing process.
  • Data Quality - Identifies, understands and corrects flaws in data that supports effective information governance across operational business processes and decision making.
  • Problem Solving - Solves problems and may mentor others on effective problem solving by using a systematic analysis process by leveraging industry standard methodologies to create problem traceability and protect the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; identifies the systemic root causes and ensures actions to prevent problem reoccurrence are implemented.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

High school diploma, GED or equivalent required.

Experience

Minimal relevant experience required. School to work program experience in relevant field preferred.

Disassemble, inspect, measure, and rebuild production and experimental engines and related components; accurately record all measurements and findings. Configure, operate, and troubleshoot data acquisition systems; review and analyze data to confirm accuracy and suitability. Install engines and components into test cells and/or test rigs; support test setup, execution, and teardown activities. Fabricate required piping, tubing, brackets, and related hardware using prints, drawings, and specifications. Diagnose and resolve engine, instrumentation, and test cell issues; document root cause and corrective actions as needed. Execute written work requests/work orders and provide clear results and updates in the required format and systems. Partner with technicians and engineers to support build, test, and troubleshooting needs; communicate effectively across teams. Interface professionally with internal stakeholders as well as customers and suppliers, when required. Follow and help maintain quality procedures; participate in audits and corrective action activities. Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and projects to improve safety, quality, and efficiency. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area (5S/housekeeping). Know and comply with all departmental and company safety policies, procedures, and guidelines; use required PPE. Handle sensitive information appropriately and maintain confidentiality. Participate in self- and team-audits and associated corrective actions. Perform other duties as assigned to support operational needs.
