Mechanical Engineering IT Manager
Join the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Brigham Young University and play a key role in supporting the technology that powers teaching, research, and innovation. As the IT Manager, you'll lead the strategy, security, and operation of a complex technology environment that supports faculty, staff, students, and cutting-edge research initiatives.
This role offers the opportunity to lead impactful projects, solve complex challenges, and influence the department's technology direction.
Lead Technology Strategy & Infrastructure
- Develop and implement the department's technology vision and roadmap.
- Oversee the lifecycle management of 500+ Windows, Mac, and Linux computers.
- Manage physical and virtual server environments, including security, backups, maintenance, and upgrades.
- Ensure technology resources are secure, reliable, and positioned to meet future needs.
Build and Lead a High-Performing Student Team
- Recruit, train, mentor, and supervise a team of talented student IT employees.
- Provide leadership, direction, and development opportunities that help students gain meaningful professional experience.
- Delegate projects, monitor progress, and ensure high-quality service and support across the department.
Drive Web & Digital Services
- Guide the strategy, administration, and continuous improvement of departmental websites and web applications.
- Oversee Drupal-based platforms that support multiple organizations and university partners.
- Champion security, usability, and innovation across the department's digital presence.
Solve Complex Challenges & Support Innovation
- Serve as the department's lead resource for advanced technical troubleshooting and problem solving.
- Partner with faculty, researchers, vendors, and campus stakeholders to deliver effective technology solutions.
- Support specialized computing environments that enable hands-on learning and impactful research.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend solutions that advance departmental goals and priorities.
What qualifies you for this role:
Required
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
- 4 years or equivalent work experience.
- 3 years in an IT related field including web experience beyond B.S. degree
- Management over IT resources, strategic planning, and project management
- Experience in web administration, design, development, and programming (PHP, CSS, HTML, SQL, Javascript)
- Experience purchasing hardware and software for Windows, MAC, Linux, and other operating systems (both servers and clients)
- Experience managing the entire life cycle of servers, laptops, and desktops
- Expert in troubleshooting hardware and software for Windows, MAC, Linux, and other operating systems (both servers and clients)
- Proficient in project management and technical writing
- Experience in managing virtual servers (including hosts) and supporting servers with multiple administrators
- Experience configuring and maintaining computer networks
Preferred
- B.S. degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems or closely related technical discipline
- 5+ years in IT management including web experience beyond B.S. degree
- Experience working with other institutions or entities desired
