Job summary

Radio Flyer is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern in Chicago, IL to support the New Product Development (NPD) team. You will help create and develop product concepts for 2027 and 2028 lines, contributing to rapid prototyping and testing efforts in a paid internship.

The role emphasizes collaboration with design engineers, data-driven prototyping, and delivering high-quality concepts while abiding by internal standards and timelines.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing Mechanical Engineering with 3.0+ GPA.
  • Strong CAD skills with SolidWorks experience.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and teamwork abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering support to design and other departments.
  • Prototype parts creation using rapid prototyping and traditional methods.
  • Test prototypes to aid the design process.
  • Develop solid models, drawings and BOMs for new concepts.
  • Communicate with engineers in the U.S. and overseas.

The Mechanical Engineering Intern position will play a key role in the continued growth and success of the company. Working with the New Product Development (NPD) team, you will assist in the creation and development of product concepts for our 2027 and 2028 product lines. This is a paid opportunity.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Provide engineering support to the product design team and other company departments including customer service, quality control and supply chain.
  • Contribute to building a 'rapid prototyping' culture to test and prove-out ideas by creating prototype parts by using rapid prototyping and traditional model making technologies.
  • Participate in product testing of prototypes to aid the design process.
  • Support the Product Development engineers and designers to develop solid models, engineering drawings and BOM’s for new product concepts.
  • Communicate with other engineers both in the U.S. and overseas through emails and conference calls.

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will be a junior or senior, majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a 3.0+ grade point average
  • CAD experience is required (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Above all, the individual must be an effective problem solver who is committed to producing products of exceptional quality and beautiful design.
  • Very important – if possible, please include work examples, such as CAD images or prototype photos of past class work, school projects, or intern work

The pay range per hour is $23-$27 Pay is based on responsibilities, skills/experience level, education, along with the Chicagoland area market, the consumer product industry, and company size. This internship may offer a relocation stipend for those who live outside of the Chicagoland area. Radio Flyer’s paid time off policies comply with the City of Chicago Paid Leave and Paid Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance.
