Job summary

Atlas Copco Grayling, MI is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Designer to craft innovative tool designs for fastening and automation solutions. You will develop concepts and create 3D models and 2D layouts, working closely with the Engineering Manager and customers to ensure designs meet specifications.

You will apply GD&T, maintain standards, and drive projects to on-time delivery while collaborating with cross-functional teams on continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles and drawing practices.
• Familiarity with GD&T and manufacturing concepts.
• Experience with CAD tools (AutoCAD and SolidWorks) through coursework or work experience.

Are you our Mechanical Engineering Designer?

This role reports directly to the Engineering Manager at our Atlas Copco-Grayling, MI facility. In this role, you will collaborate with the Engineering Manager and customer during the development of concepts and designs. Use your wisdom and mechanical ingenuity to create a highly functional tool design that meets the customer needs.

• Responsible for mechanical designs associated with production of fastening and Automation solutions.
• Design applications that meet customer requirements & are cost effective.
• Maintain company standard drawings on products / systems.
• Follow standards drafting practices.
• Design creation will include 3D models, 2D layouts, detail drawings, & bill ofmaterial.
• Consistently meet project deadlines and budget requirements.
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
• Interact and work well with coworkers and customers.
• Foster a positive and productive work environment, promoting teamwork andCollaboration.
• Punctual and consistent attendance at work is mandatory.

To succeed, you will need

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
• Experience with AutoCAD and working knowledge of SolidWorks through coursework, internships, co-op programs, or professional experience.
• Understanding of mechanical design principles and engineering drawing practices.
• Basic knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
• Familiarity with manufacturing, assembly, or machine design concepts.
• Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to define technical problems, gather information, analyze data, and develop practical solutions.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
• Self-motivated with strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Desire to learn, develop technical skills, and grow within a design engineering role.

Preferred Qualifications

• Internship, co-op, senior design project, or hands-on experience related to mechanical design.
• Familiarity with automotive manufacturing, assembly equipment, or automated systems.
• Exposure to tolerance stack-up analysis, fits, and basic machine design concepts.
• Experience creating 2D drawings and 3D models in a CAD environment.
