Responsibilities

  • Define and maintain mechanical design requirements and drive product lifecycle
  • Perform detailed mechanical design, analysis, and troubleshooting for new and sustaining engineering
  • Lead sustaining engineering by investigating performance issues and implementing corrective actions
  • Develop and analyze validation and verification test plans for performance and reliability
  • Create 3D CAD models, drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation
  • Identify improvements and validate solutions to meet outcomes
  • Support Voice of Customer activities and propose design improvements
  • Plan projects, manage priorities, and meet milestones

Responsibilities
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to define and maintain mechanical design requirements, support electrical engineering integration efforts, and drive solutions throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Perform detailed mechanical design, engineering analysis, and troubleshooting activities to support both new product development and sustaining engineering initiatives.
  • Lead sustaining engineering efforts by investigating product performance issues, identifying root causes, implementing corrective actions, and validating design improvements.
  • Define, execute, and analyze validation and verification test plans to ensure products meet performance, reliability, quality, and compliance requirements.
  • Design, develop, and maintain test fixtures, test rigs, and laboratory equipment to support product validation, qualification, and sustaining engineering activities.
  • Create and maintain accurate 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, bills of materials, and technical documentation in accordance with company standards.
  • Identify product and process improvement opportunities, develop business and technical justifications, gain stakeholder alignment, and validate implemented solutions to achieve expected outcomes.
  • Participate in Voice of Customer activities and provide recommendations for product specifications, features, and design improvements based on customer needs and field feedback.
  • Plan and coordinate project activities, manage priorities, meet project milestones, and deliver high-quality engineering work products.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and accurate technical reports, test summaries, engineering evaluations, and design documentation.
  • Present technical analyses, project updates, test results, and engineering recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Conduct peer reviews and provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineering co-ops, interns, and less experienced engineers.
  • Support intellectual property activities, including invention disclosures, patent evaluations, and patent application development as needed.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance product quality, reliability, manufacturability, and engineering processes.
Qualifications
Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  • Proven ability to multitask in a fast paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with both internal and external customers on technical and non-technical matters
  • Creative problem-solving and a customer-based perspective
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills
  • Solid project management, interpersonal and analytical skills
  • Willingness to work in a hands-on manner
  • Proven ability to develop plastic products and components, including knowledge of manufacturing processes, materials and characteristics
  • Demonstrated ability to design equipment and electro-mechanical systems
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office, SolidWorks, advanced analysis (FEA, Cycle Fatigue, Tolerance Analysis, etc.), and BOM management tools. Knowledge of third party testing agencies such as UL or CSA, and the role they play in the development of safety equipment
  • Knowledge of design for Manufacturing Assembly using automation
  • Proven ability to transform requirements into innovative solutions that creates significant value for both MSA and our customers
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects
  • Proven ability to read and interpret technical documentation relating to products and processes
Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred
  • Knowledge of manifold design, gas delivery, vibration, shock, pneumatics, and control logic.
Education and Experience Required
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, or related discipline, preferably from an ABET-accredited program
  • This position is available at two different career levels based upon experience, education, etc.:
    • Staff I: 0-2 years of relevant experience
    • Staff II: 2 years relevant experience
    • Staff III: 3+ years relevant experience
    • MS degree may be substituted for up to 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with SAP Engineering and manufacturing document control or similar MRP type system
Education and Experience Preferred
  • Experience with product reliability testing
  • Experience with (rapid) prototyping using different manufacturing methods
