Job description

Job DescriptionJob Description

Job Title: Mechanical Engineer / Mechanical Designer
Location: Onsite – Cape Canaveral, FL
Program: NASA Orion Program

About the Program:
The Orion spacecraft, built by NASA and prime contractor Lockheed Martin, is the only spacecraft capable of crewed deep space flight and high-speed return to Earth from the vicinity of the Moon. As part of NASA’s Artemis program, Orion will carry astronauts from Earth to the lunar vicinity and safely return them home. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to one of the most ambitious and historic space exploration missions of our time.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer / Mechanical Designer to join our team supporting the Orion program. In this role, you will work closely with MGSE (Mechanical Ground Support Equipment) engineers to design and develop mechanical solutions for handling, lifting, testing, assembly, and transportation of mechanical and electrical components. This position requires hands-on expertise with advanced CAD tools and the ability to support cross-functional product development efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize Creo to develop detailed plans, 3D models, and engineering drawings for parts, assemblies, and installations.
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation including Bills of Materials (BOMs), simplified representations, and shrink wraps.
  • Support team members by providing expert design knowledge and mentorship.
  • Complete layout and production detail drawings prepared by others in compliance with ASME Y14.5 engineering drafting standards.
  • Implement design modifications to improve product quality and facilitate efficient manufacturing operations.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-disciplinary teams to ensure designs meet functional and program requirements.
  • Ensure all engineering documentation and CAD models are properly maintained and verified.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 3 – 7 years of professional design experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience using Creo or a comparable 3D CAD tool (e.g., NX, SolidWorks).
  • Extensive experience with 2D drafting and engineering documentation.
  • Strong working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience with machine tool design or tool modification.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within cross-functional engineering teams.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required due to program requirements.

Why Join Us?
Be part of a team that is making history by enabling human exploration of deep space. You’ll work alongside some of the most talented engineers in the industry, contributing directly to the success of NASA’s Artemis missions and the future of space exploration.
