Job summary

Charter Steel, part of Charter Manufacturing, invites you to join our Mechanical Engineering Internship in Fostoria, OH. You’ll gain hands-on experience interpreting pneu and hydraulic schematics, applying P&ID principles, and designing components in AutoCAD while focusing on machine safety and continuous improvement.

You\'ll collaborate with maintenance and engineering teams on real-world projects, update drawings, and develop practical skills that launch your engineering career.

Qualifications

• Enrollment in a 4-year Mechanical/Industrial/Manufacturing Engineering degree.
• GPA of 2.75 or higher.
• Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships.
• Ability to work in a team and manage multiple tasks.

Responsibilities

• Update plant layouts and P&ID drawings to support projects.
• Design and modify parts in AutoCAD for fabrication.
• Support maintenance by troubleshooting equipment and root-cause analysis.
• Organize and maintain mechanical drawings and documentation.
• Support process improvement initiatives focused on efficiency, quality, and productivity.
• Collaborate with vendors and contractors on plant projects.

About the Mechanical Engineering Internship

Build hands-on mechanical engineering experience by learning to interpret pneumatic, hydraulic, and P&ID schematics, design components using AutoCAD, and apply machine safety and continuous improvement principles. You’ll strengthen your technical skills while collaborating with teams on real-world manufacturing projects.

Program structure

• Schedule: Part-time (15-20 hours/week) during the academic year and full-time (40 hours/week) during the summer.


• Location: Fostoria, OH


• Start Date: January 2027


• Duration: Year-round internship

What we're looking for

• Enrollment in a four-year degree program in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or a related field.


• Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.


• Proficient in Microsoft Office software: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint


• Strong verbal and written communication skills


• Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills.


• Ability to succeed in a team environment.


• Ability to handle multiple tasks.

Preferred experience

• Advanced Excel and analyst skills.


• AutoCAD experience.


• Exposure to Lean manufacturing and Continuous Improvement Tools.

What you'll focus on

• Update plant layouts and P&ID drawings to support engineering and maintenance projects.


• Design and modify parts in AutoCAD for fabrication by local vendors.


• Partner with the Maintenance team to troubleshoot equipment issues and identify root causes of failures.


• Organize and maintain mechanical drawings and technical documentation.


• Support process improvement initiatives focused on efficiency, quality, and productivity.


• Collaborate with vendors and contractors on plant projects and equipment improvements.
