Job summary

Modern Companies in Des Moines, IA is seeking a Mechanical Engineer Intern to assist with design, configuration, and operation of building mechanical systems, including HVAC load calculations and plumbing design, to meet project requirements. You will produce permit/construction drawings using Revit, review mechanical systems, and coordinate with designers, project managers, and field teams.

A bachelor’s in progress with HVAC emphasis is preferred, along with familiarity with Revit, Carrier HAP

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with an HVAC emphasis preferred.
• Experience with 3D modeling software, Revit preferred.
• Experience using HVAC load calculation software such as Carrier HAP or Trane TRACE.
• Able to collaborate with other team members in a professional environment and have good interpersonal skills.
• Must be able to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

• Mechanical design of building systems including plumbing, heating, cooling, ventilation, and industrial process systems.
• Work in a team setting with designers, project managers, estimators, field foremen as well as multi-discipline engineers, general contractors and sub-contractors.
• Produce permit/construction drawings using Revit 3D modeling software.
• Visit project sites to assist with construction and observation of design intent.
• Adheres to safety standards and has high regard for safety.

Job description

The Mechanical Engineer Intern is responsible for helping with the design, configuration, and operation of complete building mechanical systems to meet the intent of the project requirements. The Mechanical Engineer Intern performs HVAC load calculations, plumbing calculations and designs/reviews mechanical systems to meet current requirements for code compliance. He/she also provides equipment/fixture selection and coordinates with other trades and disciplines throughout design and construction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Mechanical design of building systemsincludingplumbing, heating, cooling, ventilation, and industrial process systems.
• Work in a team setting withdesigners, project managers, estimators, field foremenas well as multi-discipline engineers, general contractors and sub-contractors.
• Work on a variety of mechanical projects acrossModern’smarket sectors. Common projects includehealthcare, industrialandcommercial facilities.
• Producepermit/construction drawings using Revit 3D modeling software.
• Visitproject sites to assist withconstruction andobservationof design intent.
• Adheres to safety standards. High degree of regard to employee and subcontractor safety.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Pursuing abachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with an HVAC emphasis preferred.
• Experienced in 3D modeling software, Revit preferred. Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Experience using HVAC load calculation software,e.g.Carrier HAP or Trane Trace.
• Must be able to collaborate with other team members in a professional

• Must be able to manage time and workload effectively which includes planning, organizing, and prioritizing with attention to engineering detail.

Work EnvironmentConsiderations:

• Must be able to work in high pressure situations facing strict deadlines.
• Must be familiar with job site safety requirements and be prepared to wear a hard hat, work boots and goggles at potentially hazardous job sites.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

• Obtaining an education to achieve a Construction Management or Construction, Mechanical, Civil, or General Engineering degree preferred and/or completion of a qualified Mechanical apprenticeship program.
