Job summary

Modern is seeking an Estimating Intern to work with our estimators and project managers on bids and cost proposals. You'll gain hands-on experience with mechanical systems takeoffs and estimating software in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

You'll review drawings, perform quantity takeoffs for piping, ductwork, and equipment, and input data into Trimble AutoBid and Excel, while learning to research costs and organize bid documents.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
• Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
• Experience with Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or estimating software is a plus.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

Responsibilities

• Assist in reviewing project drawings, specs, and scope documents.
• Perform quantity takeoffs for piping, ductwork, and equipment.
• Input data into estimating software (e.g., Trimble AutoBid, Excel).
• Research material and labor costs and update pricing databases.
• Help organize bid documents and maintain project files.
• Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits (as applicable).
• Support the estimating team with administrative tasks and reporting.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

As an Estimating Intern, you’ll work alongside our seasoned estimators and project managers to support the preparation of competitive bids and cost proposals. This is a great opportunity to learn the fundamentals of mechanical systems, quantity takeoffs, and estimating software in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Essential duties and responsibilities

• Assist in reviewing project drawings, specifications, and scope documents
• Perform quantity takeoffs for piping, ductwork, and equipment
• Input data into estimating software (e.g., Trimble AutoBid, Excel)
• Research material and labor costs and update pricing databases
• Help organize bid documents and maintain project files
• Attend pre‑bid meetings and site visits (as applicable)
• Support the estimating team with administrative tasks and reporting
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities

• Strong attention to detail and analytical skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or estimating software is a plus

Work environment considerations

• Most time will be in the office, but some trips to job sites and customer locations are required
