Job summary

Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) seeks a Mechanical Engineer III to provide advanced engineering support for complex power generation systems. You will own assigned systems, deliver in-depth technical analysis, support large projects, and lead troubleshooting for emergent plant issues to improve reliability and efficiency.

You will work with familiarity of operating modes, maintenance strategies, and failure modes while ensuring compliance with codes and environmental regulations.

Qualifications

Opportunity Profile Position Overview Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) provides affordable, reliable, and environmentally responsible energy to the communities we serve. As a Mechanical Engineer III, you will provide advanced engineering support for complex power generation systems. You will own assigned systems and equipment, deliver in-depth technical analysis, support large and time-sensitive projects, and lead troubleshooting for emergent plant issues. This position offers the opportunity to apply broad engineering principles, guide system performance improvements, and contribute significantly to the reliability and efficiency of OPPD’s generating stations.

The Impact You’ll Have
  • Monitor system health, identify critical reliability risks, and develop corrective actions to support reliable plant operations
  • Perform advanced diagnostic evaluations and apply broad engineering principles to solve complex system issues
  • Maintain deep system expertise, including operating modes, historical trends, maintenance strategies, and failure modes
  • Support and guide the execution of large, complex, or time-sensitive projects using established project management practices
  • Lead complex troubleshooting beyond the capabilities of Maintenance and Operations teams
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and environmental regulations
  • Promote safe, reliable, and efficient operation of assigned systems and projects
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • Minimum of two years of engineering experience (Master’s degree may count for up to two years)
  • Understanding of engineering codes, regulations, and discipline-specific standards
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to adapt to varying audiences
  • Valid driver’s license
Preferred Experiences
  • Experience with Ventyx (Asset Suite), Cognos, AutoDesk tools, Bentley MicroStation, or PeopleSoft
  • EIT/FE, PE, or other relevant engineering certifications
  • Degree aligned with power generation
  • Master’s degree in Engineering or Business
  • Demonstrated ability to research issues, evaluate alternatives, and present recommendations
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Exposure to power plant operations or maintenance
  • Knowledge of power generation codes, standards, and regulations

Time Demands:
Essential Position:

This position will be required to report to work when business continuity needs are emergent and may be required to work hours beyond an employee’s normal shift.

This position must be available for overtime work and callouts as required to ensure continuance of efficient operation.

This position must maintain 24-hour availability for technical and professional assistance, emergency response, and direction of remedial action in response to such emergencies, as well as maintain availability as required for on-call duty.

Work Location:

Office: Work will be performed in a modern office environment amid normal conditions of dust, odors, fumes, and noises.

Field: Work will be performed outside in a wide variety of weather conditions (snow, rain, heat, cold, wind, etc.), terrain, and other natural environmental hazards as well as pollen and other airborne allergens.

Generation Plant: Work will be performed inside with exposure to industrial building conditions and will be exposed to extreme temperatures, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation and exposure to sounds. Noise levels may require shouting to be heard.

Work Environment:

Work will be performed in high traffic environments.

Will work around energies high voltage electrical equipment.

Will work in construction areas that present many physical hazards.

Will work at heights.

Will work in closed or confined spaces.

Will work around asbestos and lead.

Physical Demands:

Minimal physical effort typically found in clerical work. Primarily sedentary, may occasionally lift and carry light objects. Walking and/or standing as needed and minimal.

Light to moderate physical effort that includes frequent standing or walking or maintaining arms and hands in the same position for repetitive tasks. Frequently works with light objects and light hand tools.

Moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions. Frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.g., 25-50 lbs.) and use of medium weight tools.

Strenuous to extreme physical effort that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50 lbs.) and may also use heavy tools or require strenuous application in awkward positions.

Grade: S5

Minimum: $98,877

Midpoint: $123,596
