Job summary

Cohu, Inc. in San Diego seeks a Mechanical/Optical Design Engineer to develop and integrate machine vision components in automated systems. You will design precision mechanical assemblies, mounts, enclosures and alignment mechanisms for cameras, optics and lighting.

The role requires 2+ years in optical machine vision, SolidWorks proficiency, GD&T and DFM/ DFA practices, plus strong communication and problem solving. Travel may be occasional as projects demand.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or comparable degree; MS Mechanical Engineering preferred
• At least two or more years of practical experience developing and integrating optical machine vision systems (cameras, lenses, mirrors, beam splitters, lighting, strobed LED) in automated machinery environments
• Comfortable with large mechanical systems, hands-on, familiarity with industrial cameras and lighting for machine vision
• Proficient in design and modeling applications such as SolidWorks, GD&T, tolerance analysis, thermal considerations and design for manufacturing, sheet metal, machined parts, aluminum extrusions, tooling; knowledgeable in mechanical, electromechanical, optical, and automation troubleshooting
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to train others; strong analytical skills; ability to manage multiple priorities; able to work independently

Responsibilities

• Participate in all phases of the project, including design, testing and integration as required
• Design precision mechanical assemblies for industrial machine vision systems
• Design camera mounts, optical fixtures, illumination assemblies, protective enclosures and precision alignment mechanisms
• Perform tolerance stack-up analysis and GD&T
• Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
• Prototype and evaluate new mechanical concepts
• Support integration of cameras, optics, sensors and lighting into automated machinery
• Conduct root cause investigations for mechanical and system performance issues
• Collaborate with suppliers to evaluate commercial components
• Generate complete engineering documentation including drawings, BOMs and ECOs
• Support prototype builds, validation testing and manufacturing release
