Job summary

Sterling Engineering in Belvidere, IL is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to own the design through manufacturing of custom rotating equipment for chemical processing. You will design with SolidWorks, perform strength calculations, develop BOMs, coordinate with machinists and suppliers, and lead root-cause analysis to implement improvements.

Bachelor’s degree required; 5+ years experience; Autodesk Inventor / MathCAD a plus.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
• 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience.
• Proficiency in SolidWorks and 2D CAD software.
• Knowledge of mechanical systems, power transmission components, motors, materials.
• Ability to read drawings, tolerances, and develop practical designs.
• Strong problem-solving and multi-project management skills.
• Experience with Autodesk Inventor, MathCAD or MS Project is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design custom industrial machinery and components using SolidWorks.
• Perform engineering calculations involving material strength, stress, and performance.
• Develop detailed drawings, BOMs, and project cost estimates.
• Coordinate projects from design through fabrication, assembly, and testing.
• Collaborate with machinists, fabricators, suppliers, and engineers to realize designs.
• Troubleshoot design and manufacturing issues, do root-cause analysis, implement fixes.
• Support scheduling, vendor coordination, and design improvements.
