Job summary

The Newport News Shipbuilding division of HII seeks a Mechanical Engineer 3 to design, analyze and support mechanical systems for U.S. Navy ships, including submarine and aircraft carrier programs.

You will provide hands-on waterfront and manufacturing engineering support during construction and final assembly. A Bachelor's degree in engineering (ABET-accredited) and 5 years of exempt experience or equivalent is required, with strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from ABET-accredited program.
• Strong written and verbal communication, problem solving, critical thinking and technical writing.
• Experience with Microsoft Office Programs and various shipbuilding tools (DDMS, SAP, i2).

Responsibilities

• Provide on-site support for construction/fabrication issues that arise during submarine construction.
• Mentor and train level 1 and 2 engineers as well as lead teams of personnel with varying backgrounds and experience levels.
• Problem solving of shop fabrication / deck plate installation problems.
• Maintain and approve work instructions such as procedures and troubleshooting paperwork.
• Review, interpret and maintain construction drawings as well as material specifications.
• Collaborating with peer engineers, construction management and craftsmen on a daily basis.
