Job description

About Southern Electrical Equipment Company (SEECO):

SEECO was founded in 1920 when several engineers left Duke Power to create a new “start-up” company, with the intent to design and manufacture better products for their industry. They succeeded. That same drive to deliver greater performance and reliability is what animates our engineers, staff, and management today. Our ongoing product development efforts have been a key growth factor for SEECO, producing innovative and commercially successful products, such as unitized transmission switches, line post sensors for transmission switching automation applications, single bottle and multi-bottle vacuum interrupters, and single and variable speed electro-mechanical motor operators.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to help lead the continued growth and evolution of our engineering department. This role is ideal for an engineer with a strong background in manufacturing and mechanical product design who enjoys improving products, developing engineering standards, and mentoring others.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership while remaining hands‑on in product development. They will work closely with customers, manufacturing, and engineering to design new products, improve existing equipment, and develop efficient engineering processes that support long‑term growth.

Success in this role requires someone who is adaptable, eager to learn, and driven to improve systems, not simply maintain them. While experience with switchgear or power equipment is valuable, we place equal importance on engineering fundamentals, manufacturing knowledge, problem‑solving ability, and a continuous improvement mindset.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of switchgear assemblies and mechanical components using SolidWorks and DraftSight.

  • Review and approve engineering drawings, BOMs, and manufacturing documentation.

  • Develop standardized products, configurable assemblies, and engineering design practices.

  • Identify opportunities to improve engineering efficiency through CAD automation, standardization, and process improvements.

  • Mentor and develop junior engineers by providing technical guidance and design reviews.

  • Collaborate with manufacturing to improve product quality, manufacturability, and assembly efficiency.

  • Communicate directly with customers to resolve technical issues and support custom product development.

  • Travel to customer facilities (typically 1–2 trips per month) to assist with installation support, troubleshoot field issues, evaluate product performance, and implement engineering improvements.

  • Lead engineering investigations and root cause analysis for field or production issues.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across engineering and manufacturing.

  • Participate in strategic planning for future product development and engineering capabilities.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.

  • 10+ years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment. (5+ year will be considered with proven experience)

  • Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks.

  • Experience with DraftSight or similar 2D CAD software.

  • Demonstrated experience creating manufacturing drawings and bills of materials.

  • Proven ability to improve engineering workflows, CAD standards, or product development processes.

  • Strong understanding of manufacturing methods including fabrication, machining, and welding.

  • Excellent communication skills with customers, suppliers, and cross‑functional teams.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

  • Willingness to travel approximately 10–20% (typically one to two trips per month).

Preferred

  • Experience with electrical equipment, switchgear, substations, or industrial machinery.

  • Experience implementing CAD standards or product standardization initiatives.

  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems.

  • Experience in CNC programming.

  • Familiarity with engineering change management.

  • Experience mentoring engineers or leading technical projects.

They should be:

  • A quick learner who can become proficient in new products and industries.

  • Highly proficient in CAD modeling and drawing creation.

  • Passionate about process improvement and engineering efficiency.

  • Comfortable working directly with customers and manufacturing teams.

  • Willing to challenge existing methods with thoughtful, practical solutions.

  • A mentor who enjoys helping engineers develop their technical skills.

  • Hands‑on, collaborative, and eager to contribute both in the office and in the
