Job summary

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories in Pullman, WA seeks a senior mechanical engineer to lead design and validation of hardware assemblies, manage BOMs, and mentor engineers. The role covers heat transfer, packaging, and manufacturability improvements, with cross-functional collaboration with Purchasing and Manufacturing.

The candidate should have a MS/BS in Mechanical Engineering and 6+ years of CAD/ME experience, with strong leadership and communication skills.

Qualifications

  • B.S. and/or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 6+ years' experience in CAD; SolidWorks preferred.
  • Technical expertise in heat transfer, material selection, design for manufacturability, mechanics, and EM packaging design.
  • Working knowledge of project management processes; demonstrated leadership and problem solving.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a technical lead for mechanical engineering functions including assembly design and thermal analysis.
  • Direct engineers or technicians and coordinate activities with Purchasing and Manufacturing.
  • Execute high-complexity hardware projects and generate accurate Bills of Materials (BOM).
  • Write test plans and conduct design validation tests; maintain project notebooks.

What You’ll Do:
  • 1. Act as a technical lead for the following mechanical engineering functions:Assembly designPlastic and metal part designTolerance studiesDesign for manufacturability/assemblyComponent selection and specificationThermal analysis and designMechanical shock and vibration analysisImproving existing products
  • 2. Direct the efforts of Engineers or Technicians; coordinate engineering activities with Purchasing and Manufacturing.
  • 3. Execute hardware projects of high complexity.
  • 4. Generate and maintain accurate Bills of Material. Provide accurate labor and material estimates.
  • 5. Review, support, approve and provide recommendations for improvements to documentation, mechanical designs, and manufacturing process design.
  • 6. Write comprehensive test plans, conduct detailed design validation tests and review results.
  • 7. Maintain current and accurate project notebooks.
  • 8. Mentor ME Interns, Designers, and Associate MEs, and MEs
Required Qualifications

B.S. and/or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.6+ years' experience in:Computer-aided design; SolidWorks preferredElectronic manufacturing techniquesTechnical expertise in two or more of the following areas:Heat transfer/electronics coolingMaterial selection and fabrication technologiesDesign for manufacturabilityMechanicsElectromechanical packaging designWorking knowledge of project management processes and proceduresDemonstrated leadership and problem solving skillsStrong writing, documentation, and speaking skillsAbility to learn new skills and assume new responsibilitiesAbility to work cooperatively in a team environment

Pay Range Data

Mechanical Engineer: $97,700 - $144,400. Our compensation ranges are based on the responsibilities of the role. Starting pay is determined individually and considers factors such as relevant experience, skills, knowledge, and training. Candidates may be considered at different levels based on their background. As a result, pay may vary to align with the level of the role.
