Job summary

Actalent in Portage, WI is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design and develop custom sheet metal and structural components using SolidWorks, coordinating with production and suppliers to deliver manufacturable designs.

You will manage projects from concept to release, maintain BOMs, and ensure documentation accuracy while working in a hands-on team environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors in Engineering required; associates acceptable with 3+ years design experience.
  • SolidWorks design experience, 6+ months with sheet metal or structural steel.
  • 6+ months manufacturing environment experience, preferably sheet metal fabrication.
  • Fundamental knowledge of mechanical engineering for sheet metal and structural design.
  • 3D CAD design capability for sheet metal products and structural components.
  • Basic project management support from concept to production release.
  • Strong attention to detail in design and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Review customer requirements and design intent for sheet metal and structural assemblies.
  • Develop mechanical designs and variations in SolidWorks.
  • Create and maintain BOMs for materials and assemblies.
  • Coordinate with purchasing for material availability.
  • Release designs with drawings, models, and docs.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing to ensure fabrication-friendly designs.
  • Work with sales, marketing, quality to align standards.
  • Support product development via design updates.
  • Track progress from concept to release.
  • Manage files and revisions with EPDM.
  • Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency and processes.
  • Work hands-on with production to validate designs.
  • Maintain attention to detail across all design work.

Responsibilities
  • Review customer requirements to understand functional needs and design intent for sheet metal and structural assemblies.
  • Develop mechanical designs and variations for fabricated components in SolidWorks.
  • Create and maintain accurate BOMs for materials, hardware, and assemblies.
  • Coordinate with purchasing to ensure timely identification of required materials.
  • Release finalized designs with complete drawings, models, and documentation.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing to ensure designs are practical and optimized for fabrication.
  • Work with sales, marketing, and quality to align designs with customer and internal standards.
  • Support product development through design updates, improvements, and new configurations.
  • Assist project management by tracking progress and coordinating tasks from concept to release.
  • Use EPDM or similar tools to manage files, revisions, and engineering documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency, fabrication processes, and product performance.
  • Work hands‑on with production teams to validate design intent and understand fabrication methods.
  • Maintain strong attention to detail across all design work and documentation.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering; candidates with an associate degree must have at least 3+ years of relevant design experience.
  • Minimum of 6+ months of SolidWorks design experience with sheet metal or structural steel components.
  • At least 6+ months of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably involving sheet metal fabrication.
  • Fundamental knowledge of mechanical engineering principles related to sheet metal, metal fabrication, and structural design.
  • Ability to perform mechanical design for sheet metal products and structural components in a 3D CAD environment.
  • Basic project management experience, including the ability to support projects from initial concept through production release.
  • Strong attention to detail in design, documentation, and communication.

This is a Permanent position based out of Portage, WI.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $65000.00 - $70000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
