Job description

We are Bystronic - a global technology company passionate about creating an impact for a sustainable future with sheet metal and beyond.

We want to work with people who support us in creating innovative solutions to move our industry forward. Our focus is on automating the complete material and data flow of the laser cutting and bending process chain.

In a nutshell:

The Mechanical Engineer is the primary engineering resource for assigned products, manufacturing processes, localization activities, and operational improvements. The role combines strong mechanical design capability with process development, Lean manufacturing, structured problem solving, and hands-on implementation.

This engineer works independently across multiple projects, establishes priorities with general management guidance, leads cross-functional teams, and remains accountable for technical quality, implementation, documentation, timing, and measurable results. The position includes mechanical design, plant layout, test methods, supplier technical support, equipment specification, change control, and process improvement.

What you will be doing:
  • Serve as the mechanical engineering owner for assigned products, processes, localization projects, operational improvements, and supplier technical issues.
  • Support localization of equipment and components introduced for manufacture or assembly in the United States by assessing drawings, specifications, materials, supplier capability, and process readiness.
  • Work with Procurement and suppliers to interpret models, drawings, specifications, GD&T, materials, and technical requirements for sourcing decisions; prepare complete design document packages for Requests for Quote.
  • Resolve supplier design and manufacturability questions and evaluate proposed Engineering Change Requests.
  • Evaluate local impact of global Engineering Change Orders and coordinate implementation with other departments.
  • Work with Manufacturing and Quality to design fixtures, gauges, assembly methods, test methods, and ergonomic solutions that improve product quality, safety, repeatability, and productivity.
  • Develop, document, implement, and improve production, warehouse, material flow, and inventory control processes.
  • Apply Lean Six Sigma, 5S, and kaizen methods to develop processes.
  • Lead or support root cause analysis using 8D, 5 Why, Fishbone, and other appropriate tools; coordinate containment for nonconforming material and develop and implement permanent corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support Quality with First Article Inspections, supplier quality concerns, nonconforming material, advanced product evaluation, and verification that corrective actions remain effective.
  • Develop and maintain standard packaging requirements for machines and assemblies.
  • Provide hands-on floor support during implementation, startup, troubleshooting, and sustainment
  • Perform other duties assigned by management as business needs dictate.
Key tasks and Responsibilities:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering; an equivalent engineering degree may be considered when supported by substantial mechanical design and manufacturing experience.
  • Three or more years of engineering experience in manufacturing, industrial equipment, fabrication, assembly, or a similar operations environment preferred.
  • Advanced 3D modeling capability required; hands-on SolidWorks proficiency in parts, assemblies, drawings, sheet metal, weldments, and production tooling is strongly preferred; PTC Creo Direct and DraftSight experience are beneficial.
  • Advanced knowledge of GD&T, interpretation of models, drawings, specifications, tolerances, and technical requirements.
  • Experience with complex, multi-level BOMs, including interpretation, analysis, explanation, and change control.
  • Practical experience with Lean Six Sigma, 5S, kaizen, and structured problem solving.
  • Knowledge of sourcing, product localization, engineering change control, and design for X.
  • Metal fabrication experience preferred, including laser cutting, bending, welding, finishing, machining, and assembly.
  • Understanding of electrical, software, and automation preferred; ability to interpret electrical prints is beneficial.
  • Project management experience and demonstrated leadership of cross-functional teams.
  • SAP or other ERP system experience involving BOMs, routings, master data, and engineering change control preferred.
Key Skillset:
  • Mechanical practicality: develops robust, safe, manufacturable solutions without unnecessary complexity or over-engineering.
  • Process ownership moves from observation and analysis through implementation, documentation, training, audit, and sustained performance.
  • Systems mindset understands the interaction among product design, suppliers, materials, equipment, people, data, inventory, production, service, and customers.
  • Execution discipline: establishes clear actions, owners, due dates, approvals, and follow-through while managing multiple priorities.
  • Floor-focused leadership builds credibility with operators and technicians, tests solutions where the work occurs, and incorporates practical feedback.
  • Data-driven judgment uses facts, engineering analysis, direct observation, and appropriate experimentation to make timely decisions.
Your education & experience:
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time, primarily within North America; occasional international travel may be required.
  • Maintain a clean and valid driver's license and the ability to rent a vehicle.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid passport.
  • Ability and willingness to work regularly in production, assembly, warehouse, and service environments and comply with all applicable PPE and safety requirements.
What’s in it for you:
  • PTO
  • Life Insurance
  • Paid Holidays
  • 401k with 100% match up to 5%
