AMERICAN, based in Birmingham, Alabama, seeks a Manufacturing Engineer to monitor Ductile Iron Pipe and Steel Pipe QA processes, establish procedures, collect data, and support quality systems. Ideal candidates hold an ABET-accredited engineering degree, strong communication, and the ability to read technical drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, perform, and report on quality management system activities.
  • Provide training on quality management concepts and tools.
  • Assist in MES/MIS projects and documentation management.

Job description

This position covers the following Departments within the Manufacturing Division: Ductile Iron Pipe and Steel Pipe QA. Monitors manufacturing processes and activities to maximize efficiency, quality, and safety. The Manufacturing Engineer establishes manufacturing procedures, collects data, performs some design work, evaluates problems and develops solutions. Collects, monitors, and distributes documentation related to quality management and performance systems. Coordinates, performs, and reports on internal and external quality management system audits. Coordinates and conducts training on quality management and performance system concepts and tools. Manufacturing Engineers may also be involved in the development, deployment, and maintenance of Manufacturing Execution Systems projects. Manufacturing Engineers will have specialized duties specific to their area of responsibility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Must exhibit a relevant bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET EAC accredited program at a four-year college or university. Proof of degree required. A transcript or diploma would be acceptable and must be provided.
  2. Must exhibit good oral and written communication skills with all levels of the Company (i.e., good command of grammar and spelling). Must exhibit the ability to communicate in a courteous, polite, and effective manner, both verbally and in written format.
  3. Must exhibit good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with persons of different socio-economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds. Must exhibit the ability to cooperate well with other individuals and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  4. Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  5. Due to the hazardous nature of the job environment (mobile equipment, overhead cranes, etc.), an acceptable level of vision and hearing is required in order to identify and respond to visual and audible warnings in a safe manner.
  6. Must exhibit a working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software, such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  7. Must exhibit the ability to read and interpret complex specifications for projects, such as technical drawings, product codes, etc.
  8. Must exhibit good attention to detail and good organizational skills.
  9. Must exhibit a tolerance for stress, the ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and meet deadlines under a dynamic work schedule. The nature of this position requires performing job duties with numerous interruptions.
  10. Must exhibit the ability to work with confidential information and maintain confidentiality.
  11. Must be able to climb and work from high places.
  12. Must exhibit a basic working knowledge of machinery.
  13. Must exhibit a basic working knowledge of electricity and electrical circuits particularly as they apply to shop equipment operations.
  14. Subject to departmental transfer to other engineering positions within the Manufacturing Division.
  15. Must be able to work extra hours on weekdays, weekends, and holidays as required to fulfill job duties.
  16. Must exhibit the ability and willingness to be a hands‑on, shop oriented engineer.
  17. Must exhibit the ability to write technical papers and summarize results of research work.
  18. Must exhibit the ability to travel as required in order to perform the job duties and represent the Company when needed.
  19. Must possess a valid state issued driver's license.
  20. Must exhibit the ability to read and interpret measuring instruments, such as measuring tapes, rulers, calipers, gauges, dial indicators, and micrometers.
  21. Must exhibit the ability to perform mathematical calculations accurately.
  22. Must exhibit good reasoning and analytical skills for identifying and resolving problems.
  23. Must meet the physical requirements for safe operation of mobile equipment as administered by the Company.
  24. Must exhibit the ability to effectively train others.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Mechanical or Metallurgical Engineer
  2. Graduate education or professional certification. Proof of degree or certification required. A transcript or diploma would be acceptable and must be provided for proof of graduate education. A copy of the certificate must be provided for proof of achievement.
  3. Several years of work experience in a manufacturing environment.
  4. Exhibit basic management and leadership skills.
  5. Knowledge of robotic integration and programming.
  6. Knowledge of AMERICAN's manufacturing processes and products, or similar processes and products.
  7. Advanced knowledge and/or substantial work experience with the latest technologies and/or control systems.
  8. Prior work experience in electrical engineering, machine shop, metal forming, tooling design, computer science, information technologies, or maintenance.
  9. Training and/or experience with personal computer and computer aided designs (CAD).
  10. Possess current Professional Engineering License or, if candidate is a recent graduate, Engineer‑In‑Training Certification. Proof of certification required.
  11. Prior work experience with root cause analysis, corrective/preventive actions, management of change, risk assessment and treatment, audits, and document control.
