Job description

Join to apply for the Mechanical Engineer role at Science.

Science is a clinical stage, vertically integrated technology company focused on solving some of neuroscience's hardest questions and most serious unmet medical needs. We work to restore quality of life to those with debilitating conditions for which there are no treatment options, creating devices aimed at restoring vision, cognition, and mobility to patients who have lost it. To support progress across our industry, we provide state-of-the-art components and vertically integrated infrastructure for others to build on via Science Foundry.

We are looking for a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to support development of our devices and accessory tools. Work includes designing and fabricating devices, robotic systems, tools, and fixtures for biology, optics, and microfabrication teams. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented self-starter who thinks outside the box, is comfortable with open-ended problems, and can pivot quickly. Work at Science is highly collaborative, cross-functional, and encompasses the range from micro (working in microns) to macro (some machines weigh hundreds of pounds).

Role responsibilities:
  1. Design and build micro component-based implantable systems
  2. Design and build automated biological testing equipment and platforms
  3. Design and build custom surgical equipment and micro-fabrication tools
  4. Develop and execute test protocols
  5. Conduct root-cause investigations & recommend corrective actions for design issues
Key qualifications:
  1. 2 to 6 years of professional experience in a mechanical design role
  2. Understanding of fundamental mechanical principles
  3. Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)
  4. Experience with developing optomechanical systems, including precision mechanical design and optical manufacturing
  5. Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing methods, and design for manufacturing (DFM)
  6. Comfortable with basic machine shop and rapid prototyping tools
  7. Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have some subset of the following skills/experiences. We don't expect you to have them all and encourage you to apply if you are eager to learn and passionate about building life-changing technologies.
  1. Experience with early start-ups and/or the medical device industry; Class III device experience is a plus
  2. Familiarity with microfabrication techniques and tools
  3. Familiarity with fluidics and/or microfluidics, including simulation
  4. Experience with robotics/mechatronics
  5. Familiarity with microcontrollers & basic board layout
  6. Mechanical simulation and calculation experience (i.e., FEA)
  7. Experience with design controls and risk management tools
  8. BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field
