Job description

Our client is a growing industrial process technology and manufacturing organization with significant capital investment underway to support the expansion and commercialization of its operations.

As the organization continues to execute its capital growth strategy, they are seeking an experienced Mechanical Discipline Lead to provide technical leadership and accountability for the mechanical engineering scope across major capital projects.

This is an excellent opportunity for an accomplished Mechanical Engineer who enjoys leading complex projects, working closely with EPC and engineering partners, and having significant influence over mechanical design and project execution.

About the Role

The Mechanical Discipline Lead will serve as the primary point of accountability for all mechanical engineering activities across assigned capital projects.

You will lead the mechanical discipline throughout the project lifecycle—from FEL and FEED through detailed engineering, procurement, construction and project execution—ensuring mechanical designs are technically sound, appropriately specified and aligned with project scope, schedule, cost and safety requirements.

This position requires a strong combination of mechanical engineering expertise, capital project experience and technical leadership, ideally developed within chemical, petrochemical or complex process-manufacturing environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the planning, coordination and technical execution of the Mechanical Engineering discipline for assigned capital projects.
  • Define mechanical scope, deliverables and technical requirements throughout each project phase.
  • Lead mechanical scope development during FEL-2 and FEL-3/FEED, including equipment specifications required to support project cost estimates.
  • Establish applicable mechanical codes, standards, design criteria and engineering requirements.
  • Specify and select static and rotating equipment, including appropriate materials of construction for the intended service.
  • Review and approve specifications, datasheets, calculations, drawings, models and other mechanical engineering deliverables.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction to mechanical teams within external engineering and EPC organizations.
  • Review vendor technical documentation and ensure equipment designs meet project and operational requirements.
  • Coordinate closely with internal and EPC Project Managers to maintain alignment across scope, schedule, quality, priorities and technical interfaces.
  • Identify mechanical engineering and project risks early and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Communicate technical recommendations, risks and key decisions effectively to project and senior leadership.
  • Develop and implement engineering standards, procedures and templates to improve consistency and quality across projects.
  • Provide technical support throughout engineering, procurement, construction and project execution.
  • Make sound project-level mechanical engineering decisions with limited supervision while engaging specialist resources when appropriate.
Qualifications

The successful candidate will be an experienced Mechanical Engineer with demonstrated responsibility for the mechanical discipline on significant industrial capital projects.

You will bring:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering – required.
  • 7–10+ years of progressive Mechanical Engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading the mechanical discipline on capital projects.
  • 5+ years of project engineering/capital project experience.
  • Previous experience within chemical, petrochemical, refining or complex process manufacturing environments.
  • Strong experience specifying and evaluating static and rotating equipment.
  • Experience with FEL, FEED and detailed engineering project phases.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable mechanical engineering codes, standards and design practices.
  • Experience reviewing and approving technical deliverables produced by EPC firms, engineering consultants and equipment vendors.
  • Strong understanding of materials selection and equipment design requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify technical risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Experience working across multidisciplinary engineering and project teams.
  • Strong technical judgment with the ability to operate independently and make sound engineering decisions.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder-management capabilities.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer, without the need for sponsorship now or in the future.

Why Join Our Client?

This is an opportunity to join a growing organization at an important stage of its capital expansion and play a key role in the engineering and execution of major projects.

The Mechanical Discipline Lead will have significant influence over equipment selection, mechanical design, engineering standards and project execution, while working closely with experienced internal leaders, engineering partners and EPC organizations.

For a Mechanical Engineer who wants technical ownership, complex capital-project exposure and the opportunity to help shape engineering practices within a growing organization, this is an excellent career opportunity.
