Position Overview

As a Mechanical Designer, you will develop detailed piping and mechanical equipment and systems designs, layouts, and 3D models for power plants, carbon capture facilities, and related projects. Responsibilities include designing systems such as steam cycle, boiler feed, condensate, water treatment, fuel handling, hydraulic, heat transfer, conveying, or air and gas systems.

District Overview

Kiewit Power Engineers works on diverse projects across North America, including gas-fired generation, power delivery, environmental retrofits, renewables, and water/wastewater. Our team leads the engineering process, focusing on safe, cost-effective, innovative designs that meet client expectations and uphold Kiewit's legacy of excellence.

Location

This position is based in the Charlotte, NC Metro area with flexible hybrid work options. Occasional travel to Lenexa, Kansas, is required.

Responsibilities
  • Draft sketches, P&ID diagrams, plans, sections, details, equipment layouts, and 3D models for power plant systems, including steam cycle, boiler feed, water treatment, fuel handling, hydraulic, heat transfer, conveying, rotating equipment, and balance of plant systems. Ensure designs include equipment layout, interferences, and constructability.
  • Verify design deliverables comply with industry codes, standards, contract requirements, and company standards.
  • Adhere to schedules and work assignments to ensure project success.
  • Coordinate with team members, support work progress, and provide training or mentorship to interns or new graduates.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, applying standards correctly.
  • Seek and incorporate feedback, work efficiently both individually and as part of a team.
  • Identify scope changes during projects and produce design modifications to stay within budget and schedule.
  • Strive to meet or exceed quality and outcome expectations of clients and stakeholders.
  • Complete miscellaneous tasks supporting project development and participate in meetings as needed.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Design or Drafting, with a background in piping or mechanical systems design in a 3D environment.
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Drafting/Design or Engineering preferred; high school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience with 3D programs like MicroStation, AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, SmartPlant3D, AutoCAD Plant 3D, Autodesk, or Open Plant, including interference checking and constructability analysis.
  • Proven ability to conceptualize designs/models in 2D/3D, particularly for mechanical systems similar to those outlined. Experience with power generation (thermal, hydro, wind, solar, geothermal) or related industrial markets is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and independently with limited oversight.
