Position Overview

We are an innovative team of engineers and designers supporting diverse projects in the power market. Our staff collaborates with Kiewit’s fabrication and construction teams to deliver safe, cost-effective, and innovative electrical designs that meet client expectations and uphold Kiewit’s legacy of excellence. As an electrical designer, you will develop electrical systems designs/layouts and 3D models for various projects.

District Overview

Kiewit Power Engineers works on projects across North America, including gas-fired generation, power delivery, environmental retrofits, renewables, and water/wastewater. Our team leads the engineering process, focusing on safety, cost efficiency, and innovation.

Location

This position is based in Charlotte, NC, with flexible hybrid work options.

Responsibilities
  1. Utilize SmartPlant3D and other design tools for electrical layouts and drafting from concept to completion.
  2. Properly size cables and raceways.
  3. Design electrical equipment layouts, duct banks, conduit, cable trays, grounding, lighting, and lightning protection systems.
  4. Check and navigate 3D models for interference and constructability.
  5. Route electrical cables in 3D to generate cable schedules.
  6. Perform NEC-compliant calculations for conduit fill, cable tray systems, and pull box sizing.
  7. Apply standard design practices with minimal supervision.
  8. Seek and incorporate feedback; work effectively both independently and in teams.
  9. Identify scope changes during projects and adjust designs accordingly.
  10. Meet or exceed quality expectations and project deadlines.
  11. Support project development with miscellaneous tasks and participate in meetings.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in electrical design or drafting.
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred; GED with electrical design training acceptable.
  • Experience with 3D design programs like MicroStation, AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, SmartPlant 3D, or similar.
  • Proficient in conceptualizing electrical designs/models in 3D environments.
  • Ability to work in a team and independently.
  • Strong communication skills in English.
