Job summary

Austal USA is seeking a skilled individual to responsible for developing both 2D and 3D drawings. The role entails checking the quality of CAD drawings made by drafters, and it requires a minimum of one year of experience in 3D modeling and a strong background in shipyard design.

Applicants should hold a High School Diploma or equivalent; an Associate's Degree in CAD is preferred. Knowledge of CAD tools such as AutoCAD and ShipConstructor is necessary for this position.

Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW

Reports to: Lead Designer. Supervises: CAD Drafters.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for 2D and 3D drawing development.
  • Check drawings created by CAD Drafters.
QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate's Degree or higher in CAD preferred.
  • 1 year minimum of 3D modeling experience.
  • 1 to 3 years of shipyard design or production/construction experience, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in construction of high‑speed aluminum vessels preferred.
  • Experience with modular construction methods preferred.
  • Experience in design and construction of U.S. Navy vessels preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Understanding of scheduling and ability to adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Computer literate and familiar with Microsoft Office products.
  • Experience interacting with multiple design teams and members of production.
  • Experience using 2D and 3D AutoCAD: basic draw and modify commands, layer types, line types, dimensions, unit of measure, creating orthographic views from isometric drawings, 3D modeling commands, creating 3D models from orthographic views or vendor-furnished information, interface models from other disciplines using XREF command, model in 3D model space without interferences.
  • Experience with ShipConstructor preferred.
  • Possess a good understanding of design in any of the following areas: equipment, electrical fitout, foundations, hull, HVAC, pipe, product hierarchy, structure.
ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES
  • Must meet employment eligibility guidelines: 18 years of age or older, proof of U.S. Person Status, no felony convictions of theft/deception or violent crimes within 7 years, no felony convictions of drug crimes within 3 years, willing to submit to drug screen and background check.

  • May lead the work of CAD Drafters.
  • May determine technical adequacy of drawings and models developed by CAD Drafters.

  • May work with Production Management and internal cross-functional design teams.
DISCRETION EXERCISED
  • May provide input to evaluations of CAD Drafters.
