Job summary

Austal USA is seeking an experienced engineer to supervise Engineers I & II, Designers, and Draftspersons in Mobile, Alabama. The successful candidate will perform complex design calculations and manage design projects for marine vessels, ensuring compliance with regulations and specifications.

This role requires a Bachelor’s degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering and 5 to 8 years of relevant experience, preferably in shipbuilding. The position offers a dynamic work environment with exposure to various conditions in vessel construction.

Qualifications

Job description

Position Overview

Austal USA is a leading ship manufacturer. The role reports to the Marine Engineering Manager and supervises Engineers I & II, Designers, and Draftspersons.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform complex design calculations and develop drawings for construction and maintenance of marine vessels and shipboard systems.
  • Ensure vessel design compliance with regulatory authorities, specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Technically manage design and analysis projects from concept to completion.
  • Review drawings for compliance, accuracy, and ease of production.
  • Specify and review materials and equipment.
  • Provide technical support during construction and liaise with production.
  • Direct engineers, designers, drafters, engineering consultants, and vendors in developing vessel design information.
  • Collaborate with production and project teams to implement vessel and component designs.
  • Facilitate training, mentoring, and development of other engineers.
  • Provide work leadership and direction to other engineers.
  • Comply with Austal’s employee handbook and company procedures.
Qualifications
  • 5 to 8 years of relevant engineering experience in manufacturing or construction; shipbuilding industry strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and team‑building skills.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Pipeflow, NAVIS, and MS Office.
  • Knowledge of modular construction methods and maritime regulatory authorities (e.g., ABS, NAVSEA, MIL, USCG, IMO).
  • Experience in design and construction of U.S. Navy vessels.
  • Technical expertise in piping, HVAC, ship and propulsion systems, engine alignment, mechanical system analysis and integration.
Employment Eligibility & Requirements

All candidates must meet Austal USA’s basic employment eligibility guidelines and be able to obtain and maintain a DoD clearance if required.

  • Minimum age 18 years.
  • Proof of U.S. Person Status.
  • No felony convictions of theft, deception, or violent crimes within the past seven years.
  • No felony convictions of drug crimes within the past three years.
  • Willing to submit to a drug screen and a background check.

Work Environment
