Job summary

AeroVironment is seeking a Mechanical Engineer III to design, test, and analyze mechanical systems for next-generation UAVs. You will contribute from concept through detailed design, building and testing subsystems as part of a focused design team.

The role requires hands-on prototyping, electro-mechanical design, and strong experience with CAD, drawings, and thermodynamic constraints. Collaboration with suppliers and internal teams is essential.

Qualifications

• 5–8 years of experience designing complex mechanical systems with transition to hardware.
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent experience.
• Experience designing machined parts, simple composite parts, plastic injection molded parts, sheet metal parts, wire assemblies, mechanical assemblies.
• Hands-on building/prototyping experience for lightweight miniature robotic systems or similar.
• Experience designing electro-mechanical systems with thermodynamic constraints.
• Proficiency with mechanical engineering processes and design/analysis tools; ASME Y14 standards.
• Proficient at SolidWorks as well as MS Office.

Responsibilities

• Designs structural components, electro-mechanical design, payload mechanical design, ground equipment mechanical design, launching systems, flight control actuators integration, thermal analysis, prototype hardware development, tooling and fixtures design.
• Reads blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and reports; assists project managers with planning and scheduling.
• Confer with engineers to implement procedures, resolve malfunctions, and provide technical information.
• Develop manufacturing drawings and BOMs for components and assemblies using industry drafting standards.
• Researches and analyzes customer proposals to evaluate feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements.
• Support design reviews, assist with planning, and support manufacturing & suppliers.
• Resolves a wide range of issues creatively while following company policies; meets project schedule and budget.
• Demonstrates understanding of specialization; re-engineer and propose alternate solutions for complex issues.
• Works on problems of diverse scope; provides instructions to lower level engineers and cross-functional teams.
