Job summary

Commonwealth Sciences, Inc. in Norwood, MA seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer/Project Engineer to support project plans, timelines, budgets, and schedules, and to prepare essential documentation such as plans, status reports, agendas, and notes.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Support senior project managers with project plans, timelines, budgets, and schedules.
  • Prepare and update project documentation including plans, status reports, agendas, and notes.
  • Review, update, and modify drawings using AutoCAD 2D/3D and ensure they meet specs.
  • Coordinate activities among internal teams, customers, vendors, and stakeholders.
  • Track milestones and risks, supporting mitigation strategies and project execution.
  • Assist QA/QC to ensure safety and quality requirements are met.

Mechanical Design Engineer/Project Engineer
  • Support senior project managers with the development and execution of project plans, timelines, budgets, and schedules.
  • Prepare, organize, and update project documentation, including project plans, status reports, meeting agendas, and meeting notes.
  • Use 2D and 3D Autodesk AutoCAD to review, update, and modify technical drawings; interpret design requirements and ensure drawings align with project specifications and applicable industry standards.
  • Coordinate communication and project activities among internal engineering teams, customers, vendors, and other external stakeholders.
  • Track project schedules, milestones, deliverables, and overall progress while helping identify potential project risks and supporting the development of mitigation strategies.
  • Assist with quality assurance and quality control activities while ensuring project work is completed in accordance with established safety and quality requirements.
  • Identify project issues or roadblocks early, work collaboratively with engineering and project teams to resolve them, and help keep projects moving forward.
  • Gradually take on additional project engineering responsibilities, providing an opportunity to grow beyond design and CAD-focused work into broader project coordination and execution.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered.
  • 1–5 years of experience in mechanical design, preferably involving production machinery, process equipment, and/or process instrumentation.
  • Hands-on experience using Autodesk AutoCAD in both 2D and 3D environments.
  • Strong ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively with engineers, project managers, clients, and vendors.
  • Interest in developing into a broader Project Engineer role with increasing responsibility for project execution and coordination.
