Job summary

Goodwin Recruiting is partnering with a defense robotics organization to hire a Mechanical Design Engineer in Charlotte, NC. You will design, prototype, test, and launch mission-critical mechanical systems for unmanned vehicles and advanced electro-mechanical platforms.

The role involves developing 3D models, performing FEA, and collaborating with manufacturing and cross-functional teams to ensure manufacturability and reliability. ITAR eligibility is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering required
• 3+ years of mechanical design experience in motorsports, defense, military, or automotive industries expected
• NX CAD proficiency preferred; ANSYS or similar FEA experience required
• Experience taking products from concept through manufacturing
• Prototype development and testing experience
• Strong understanding of structural design, load paths, and mechanical systems
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills in a collaborative environment
• ITAR eligibility (U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident, or U.S. Person) required

Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical components and systems from concept through production
• Create 3D models, assemblies, and detailed manufacturing drawings using NX CAD or similar software
• Develop prototypes, conduct testing, and implement design improvements based on test results
• Perform structural analysis and support lightweight mechanical design using FEA tools such as ANSYS
• Collaborate with manufacturing to ensure designs are practical, reliable, and manufacturable
• Work with multidisciplinary teams to integrate mechanical systems into advanced vehicle platforms
• Support product validation, troubleshooting, and continuous product improvement
• Interface with customers and government stakeholders to support technical discussions, testing, and product implementation

Design Engineer Responsibilities

• Strong understanding of structural design, load paths, and mechanical systems


• Excellent communication and problem‑solving skills in a collaborative engineering environment


• Must be eligible to work on ITAR-regulated programs (U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident, or U.S. Person)
